Banks like electronic methods for obvious cost savings, customers like electronic methods for convenience, sadly having to use a card reader to log on to online banking every time is not convenient.
Thankfully my main bank has not introduced these nuisance items.0 -
we've got one for our nationwide accounts. well actually we've got 2. they sent one to me and one to my husband even though we both live at the same address, have got a joint account together and share the same last name. but no we still need one for each of our own personal accounts. why??

The cost of implementing software to prevent such automatic dispatches is not worth it when you consider any potential savings and the number of potential complaints and customer misunderstandings (i.e. that they need their own reader).What would William Shatner do?0 -
That really is taking things too far, what happens if you need to make an urgent transfer, your battery in the card reader goes flat, you live in a village and you obviously don't keep a spare button type battery.
You are well stuffed.
Or if you forget to take on holiday - particularly a longer than average holiday - for online access to keep an eye on things.0 -

I didn't send for mine and won't be. Card readers sound like a pain and banks should make sure their sites are up to date security wise. I make sure mine is and never share my bank details
I didn't send for ours. There was no choice; you had to have them.
We now have three as somehow we managed to make an error
doing a transaction with my husbands reader. We were then
locked out with the PIN for that A/c, and only after one attempt,
not three which they say they will allow. They told me they could
not unlock it and I would need to go to a LINK machine to do
that. They have sent a new debit card and now a new reader.
Still no joy. They say they can do transfers if instructed by
secure message.
If this posting comes out looking strange it's because my computer
is acting up. The print is running off the edge of the page and I

hear, hear!it is hard to imagine a situation where a fraud could be committed involving a payment to an account you has set up yourself using the card reader.
On dear, so Nationwide's not alone. I had hoped they were because now they will argue that it somehow makes sense - and Co-op can also!Co-op/Smile also requires it for each payment, it encourages me to pay by debit card where possible......under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam0 -

I really can't see why anyone should have a problem using the card readers. I have one for Barclays and one for Nationwide.
I feel safer logging into Barclays, as I use the card to log in.
The Nationwide, I have to use only when I transfer money to another institution/persons account.
I have accounts with six other banks/building societies and would prefer it if they used card readers too.0 -
I'm happy with mine; it is an effective security measure that I welcome. But I can completely understand people being annoyed with them. It is quite dumb when it involves altering a standing order to someone you've already set up as a payee. I'm sure a criminal really wants to stop my landlord getting my rent.0

I can understand wanting the extra security when transferring money out of the account or setting up SO/DDs but why do we need it just to log in?
Often I just need to log in to check whether money has been received/paid out so it's a pain to have to use the reader to do this. It is also an extra pain for me as it means I have to try and remember the PIN number for the debit card which I would otherwise never need to use!
