Now, there are charities that do rely on their shops for a large part of their income. These will be mainly the local ones - such as Hospice shops. I avoid the "chain" stores as these can be expensive or over stocked with new goods.
Do you mind me asking where your "knowledge" comes from?
Charities like CRUK do not just have shops to promote the charity. Is there a person in the country who has not heard of Cancer Research? Probably not. Its one of the reasons but not THE reason. Shop revenue brings in a percentage of the funds they need to raise. Small in comparison to other fundraising quite often but all of the factors help raise the money. Shops don't fund research, they help fund it.
You are incorrect about the hospice shops - I know because I run a chain of them. We bring in less than a quarter of the running costs for our hospice. We also work very closely with other hospices across the country and big charities too. Spreading the message of the charity is much more vital to hospice shops.
But I agree with you about higher prices in some of the bigger chains shopsNot been here in years! Hi everyone. Make £10 a day challenge = £78.45/1550 -

I have to say I do think haggling in a charity shop is also a bit cheeky...as most are extremely reasonably priced to begin with.
The Sue Ryder shop a few miles away from me offered me a loyalty card the other week! You get a stamp for every £5 you spend, and once you've got around 6 stamps you get another £5 off your next purchase. I rejected the offer of course!
I love getting a bargain like everybody else, but I also get great pleasure from the knowledge that the cost of my fab new purchase is going to a charity. Infact if something is, say around £3.50, then more often than not I put the 50p change from my £4.00 in the collection tin.
Ive even seen people take stuff back to Charity Shops too... would you bother for a couple of pounds?! Re-donate it!
I'm not having a go at anyone, but IMHO I'd feel extremely embarrassed to barter in a CS. But each to their own huh!?
I seen this the other day in a charity shop when someone was asking what the refund policy was and how long they had to return it - i nearly fell sideways!:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one:beer::beer::beer:

jtb - you've got a blog! I'm following!
Went to a jumble sale last night and managed to spend a whole £5! I'm keeping a rather groovy Welsh tweed coat, leather Gladstone bag and some vintage driving gloves plus a Bakelite plinth bowl and 1940's powder puff (photos on the blog).
Bf found some trendy square toed antique leather shoes and another Levi's Sherpa jacket.
Things for eBay include:
2 x vintage day dresses
Rabbit fur coat
Vintage sheepskin coat
Harrods jumper
2 x Hackett polo shirts and 1 x Lacoste (real, I've done my homework)
Velvet flares
Velvet jacket
Kenneth Cole handbag
Vintage T-Bar shoes
1980's batwing cardi/coat
1960's evening bags x 2
Jacques Vert bag
DKNY silk blouse
1960's psychedellic silk negligee
Oh, I love a jumble!

I bought a handbag and a back scratcher in a charity shop then decided I didn't like them after all. I was too embarrassed to donate them back to the charity shop in case they recognised them, so I took them to another one. I wouldn't have dreamt of asking for a refund though.0

Today I was very pleased with my purchases...!
I was looking for gold/cream coloured demask material for a chair i'm re-doing for my dressing table and everywhere I found selling what I liked was super expensive!Boohoo!
Found 2 plush extra large pillow-cases in the design I was looking for - a quid each - which will do just the trick! I was dead chuffed!
Also got a very nice shabby chic cake stand which i'm going to use as a jewellery holder (£1.50), 2 books on thrifting & making new furniture from recovered junk (95p each) and a nice coral M&S cardi which will do nicely for work! (£2.50)
I hope you all get great bargains this weekend too!0 -
goanmad ....... you did great at the jumble sale ! We used to have sally army ones where we lived before - everything was 20p and they were always full of great finds and loads of them
. I'm loving that coat (why can't I ever find anything as lovely as that ! booo hoooo lol)
Everything looks great on you too
No pics of me on my blog I'm afraid, not until I've lost at least another stone .
Off to the 'dealer' car boot tomorrow morning. There are 2 jumble sales on, but not local enough for me to be able to go (DS and DH at footie training so I won't have chance to get to jumble and back again in time to pick them up. So, car boot it is instead :undecided)
I'll probably pop to CS in town during the afternoon just for a browse:jWeight loss to date 1st 11.5lb :j0 -
at last i can post my own finds, i keep getting envious reading about everyone elses, its rare to find a bargain in one of the 5 charity shops near me but today i went to a different area & as i was passing the pdsa shop at 11.45 i spotted a sign in the window saying 'happy hour 12-1pm, all ladies clothing £1'! it would have been rude not to take a look, i ended up with a longline plummy coloured top from new look, a grey cardie from m&s & best of all a cream fake fur coat from debenhams, all for £3. i know its not as good as some of your finds but it made me happy & its for an animal charity so even better:j'there goes an old transexual, last seen heading south,
her friends call her Bernie but her real name is Ralph'
