Agree with Halia - a home made dried flower basket arrangement wouldn't do it for me but home made foods, gloves, a nice card is appreciated. Basically if someone knows me they would realise I don't like fussy ornaments but love food and practical stuff like gloves and socks. Also even if you give any gift to people however much you spend in time or money they will always find fault - some people are just like that. It's their loss. My MIL spent ages preparing a family tree and putting all documents in a ring binder and that was appreciated for my birthday.
  • i love the gnome for life, would you mind sharing how to make them? i would be very pleased to recieve one of these as a gift and know many people who would love one too.

See I wouldn't appreciate a 'crafty' homemade gift - buts thats not because its homemade but because I really can't ever see the point of things like etched glassware or fluffy gnome (no offence its just not me) so if someone gave me that I would feel that they hadn't put much effort into thinking about what I liked.

HM edibles or very practicle things would always be appreciated however. My MIl made some fitted cotsheets for me 3 years ago which was great, HM from fabric she already had so minimal cost for her.
Also TIME! as a very busy mum who works + studies I'd really appreciate babysitting 'voucher's or offers of a backrub, help with garden/ DIY, ironing etc.
That is EXACTLY how I feel,I wouldn't appreciate anything 'cluttery' -ornaments or things with a purely decorative purpose and no use to them but thats because I really don't like things like that ,whether shop bought or home made.
I would love something home made like a journal or photoframe /album ,storage etc so to me ,if someone made me a decorative item then they had not actually put 'time&thought' into it or they would know that those sort of thing were not me ,if I am explaining myself properly ?
Personal HM gifts are fab if they are personal ,I dont think that churning out a load of dollies tied up in cello and some ribbon given to EVERYONE whether they like that sort of thing or not is very thoughtful ,infact thats surely just as bad as going out and buying a load of Lynx/Dove giftsets ?

I agree! PLEASE match the gift to the recipient.

For example: somebody may get a lot of pleasure out of cross stiching a picture of a cutesy kitten with a trite motto, but why expect a 16 year old boy to go into raptures over it?

(A polite 'thank you' was given, naturally!)

My work colleagues all got pots of gold for their xmas presents and a card, they loved the poem, they loved the sentiment, the effort, they raved about it my whole shift and kept thanking me, to be honest it was fab to have so much praise for something that they appreciated and would definetly do it again, they now are thinking of doing it for their friends and family so the HM lives on:D

  • i love HM gifts...especially those done by children ..this year we have done a bit more HM stuff..we are making hampers with snowman soup, HM jam, gingerbread men (decorated by ds1) and probably some truffles, we have also just for the kids put some bars of chocs and santa chocs, a coins ina mug and wrapped with cellophane and sprinkles etc...with their name on it so that tehy feel like they are getting something just for them.

ds1 took his HM jam into school for his head teacher, his 2 support teachers, and class teacher plus snowman soup for the 2 TA in his class.
one of his support workers was so impressed she said it was one of the best and most thoughtful presents shes ever hada nd will will never forget it (it also had the jam is like love poem in it) she was close to tears reading it...she then sent me a lil thank you card saying it was so kind :) that is why i love making HM gifts because people appreciate the extra effort.

i do agree tho on the presents that will not be used or are not suited to taht person.
last year i made jewellery for the girls in my family they all said their thanks lol but there was only really 2 who really seemed to appreciate it...plus i made some wine glass charms for the aunt hosting xmas dinner as an extra thanke :)

i tend not to buy bday prezzies either just make thema cake...which always go down well.

    Afternoon all

Im another one who loves home made gifts... 2 years ago I did everyone hampers of German goodies -which went down as the best presents ever :j
My intention this year was to make everything -scarves, jewellery etc -but I fell by the wayside in spectacular fashion :o..mainly due to ill health, so In the end I focussed on my mums pressie and manage to get it done just before I went into hospital in October (good job too as I haven't been up to anything since )
So here is mums x-stitch ...and I KNOW she will appretiate it as she is a x-stitcher too ;)
    inherframed.th.jpg
I have now started plotting for next year (this year its shop pressies ) ..the plus point is that I have a few items made -so I have a head start :rotfl:plus I have all of the materials ready to go :Dand come January I WILL be making a start for next year :A:rotfl:
Myalphabetgirls -so sorry for your loss... We lost my sister last year and obviously it has hit mum so hard -have you ever tried x-stitching? it is soooo difficult to think of anything else when you are x-stitching ...you just get lost in it...It has kept my mum sane this year -she had a mastectomy a few months ago and couldn't wait to get back to the sewing so she could "switch off " for a while... the next picture she is set to do is actually of my sister -with her hubby and daughter -she is going to be doing it 3 times -1 for my BIL one for my niece and one for herself...
anyway enough waffling... here is hoping that everyone likes what they recieve and appretiate the love, time and thought that has gone into them ;)

Before i found MSE i didnt know about the handmade xmas pressies. Never recieved one or done one before!
I think they are gorgeous, everything i`ve seen so far is fab :)
I have made my dh a hamper this year as we are on a very tight budget and said no pressies this yr, but i had to do something so took ideas off of here.
I am not very crafty have tried to make my dd a pink sock monkey, and my ds a blue one but failed terribly :( Next year i plan to do homemade all round x

I would certainly appreciate a homemade gift, more meaning to them too!!x
