When I was at school one of my friends whose mother was a fabulous dressmaker was mercilessly teased because she wore homemade clothes and "couldn't afford to buy them". I'm sure the same kind of stigma still goes on nowadays.

I think you've explained this perfectly. Memories of scratchy home knitted jumpers also spring to mind - but these days its much cheaper to buy a cheapy fleece than the wool needed to knit your own.

Men in general dont seem to "get" home made presents and regard them as the cheapskate option, IME. Spoilsports!
  • I generally do home made gifts alongside other gifts. If I had the talent I would make main gifts though as I think they are lovely!

My first baby is due in four weeks, so I'm thinking about doing some little handmade bits to be 'from the baby' this year as I think that would be quite cute!

Thats a fab idea, although try and get a head start now as i have had NO time what so ever to get any crafting or handmade stuff done since she came along.

My DD was born 4 weeks ago, so i have done handprints in frames from all the kids as well as some calendars with pictures they have made at school. All grannies and grandads get an updated school photo from my DS too but they will also get one of both DD's too this year.

You could always wrap your handmade gifts up in this ribbon & bow:

    there are 3 other saying's:
    ''this is a recycled gift''
    ''i have kept the receipt''
    ''nice wrap crap present''
:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T

  • Wish I'd had that ribbon last year! I made my Dad and his family an after-dinner hamper with real coffee, port, chocolates etc and it looked gorgeous. I didn't even get a thank you so they'll just be getting a box of biscuits or something this year!

These are lovely, I've been meaning to get a grandparent book for my husband's grandparents, and this kind of thing is really nice.

I finally got round to making it today it is here on my blog, my DS was taking the strips out of my mum's jar and asking me the questions!http://sharonfranklin.blogspot.com/

I can make cake, so I know I'll have a go at making the Xmas cake and maybe mince pies. Think it stems from when I was little, and my mum making all the Xmas food on Xmas eve (mince pies, cheese scones, sausage rolls etc) and we'd always have them Xmas day evening and Boxing Day. (also means I can enjoy yummy gluten free stuff!)

I know what you mean about some people and H/M gifts. My niece adores it when my Mum knits her sweaters (as do a few other people, mainly kiddies) Their mums love it too as they're always really warm and soft, wash well and don't lose their shape (and last out the winter)

This year I'm trying my hand at a few H/M gifts, mainly cross stitch (2 finding nemo ones for my niece, and one big 'un for my mum) and I reckon my mum will appreciate it, as that's what she does too, and I don't think anyone has ever given her one before (as long as I don't do what my sis did one year, and make her cry with it)

I'm lucky that my kids are still young enough (3,5 and 7) to think that things made by mummy are fantastic so they are getting a knitted toy each and I am cross stitching Christmas cards for them. My mum also loves anything I make so she is having a big hamper of homemade jams, chutneys, sweets etc. My three best friends also like homemade stuff so they are having jam and chutney baskets, plus the one whose birthday is just before Christmas is getting some lavender bags I have made for that. My inlaws aren't quite so keen on homemade, so they are getting vouchers plus a little jam and chutney basket. My sister and SIL would probably die than have anything handmade, so I don't waste my time making for them! The kids' teachers are having homemade fudge which I hope they like, if they don't then it's tough TBH, I work in a nursery school and would much rather have something that the kids had made for Christmas than another smellies set...

    Depends what it is really.

Every year I make pickles, chutneys and jams and people always look forward to them and I also get requests. My friend crochets and every year she makes my kids hats, scarves and gloves, they are always lovely. Another friend make them knitted stockings which are amazing and will be used forever.

    However..........

Last year I got a basket from a less crafty friend with one of those cheap nylon scrunchies, a random mug with a metal spoon dipped in chocolate, few other things and a magazine, take a break or something mad, loads of common people going on about how there smacked up kids were not bad lads really.

I also reckon 99 out of 100 people who get snowman soup never drink it.

    er - that's odd...
