I finally gave up on trying to budget within one account and set up several for different pots. It's so much easier as now I know how much is left without having to work things out.

One gets my salary and has all the regular bills, with a linked savings account to put aside money for utilities and essentials (eg dental bills). Another current account for fun stuff - basically socialising, clothes and hair/ beauty - might have to split these later, not really managing to hang onto money for eg. haircuts :o . The other current account is for car money and I have one more savings account for professional expenses (that I have to pay for myself, eg. books, exam fees, registration fees). The money goes straight over on payday when I do the rest of the bill payments and transfers.

I can't believe the difference it's made having to hand over a different card and being able to see each day what's left in the account. Plus the guilt factor if I run out of one and have to transfer lol.

My council tax bill arrived and has not increased :j even though I would happily pay them to keep the libraries open :( . Now let's just hope that ridiculous ruling on insurance discrimination doesn't reset my insurance costs to those of a 19 year old boy racer  (not that one of those would be seen dead in my car :rotfl:)

    Hi Rosa

    - EXCELLENT news on the car tax :T

I've just about managed that for 2 years & am on my first year of saving for insurance - hopefully I'm too old ( never thought I'd be saying that :rotfl:) to classify as boy racer material.

It's taken about 2 years to get to where I am now with my saving funds & it is the best thing I have ever done to manage my money. I still dont have an emergency fund (or a holiday one this year :( ) but that will be on my to do list when DF.

Having said all the above; I still managed to miscalculate my outgoings this week & had to 'borrow' some cash from one of my funds to pay in current account quick :o

Wow, fab news Rosa, well done.

I have to say that is one of the things I like about living in London is not having to have a car. When I had a car before it was so expensive paying out for tax and insurance and that was before things like repairs and MOT :eek: and I was never organised enough to save up for it.

Such an achievement - well done!

I should be saving up for my contents insurance....but I'm not .....:o
I've got my own flat :j:j

Now I have to pay the bills

    Thanks makeup

One of the reasons I'm not used to all this is that I didn't have a car when in London either. No point. So I finally got my licence at 32 on the 4th go and had no idea of the amount of blooming paperwork involved in car ownership.

I have to confess I don't use it all that much, as it's only 15 mins to work and at the moment I'm at college elsewhere part of the week. I'll bike once I get college done with. But it is such a reassurance to know it's there if I do need to get around in a hurry. My dad had a heart attack a few months after I got the car, and it made such a difference to be able to just fling everything I might need in the boot and go, instead of having to pack properly and arrange trains to the other end of the country and to be picked up etc. I recently gave my number to someone at work who'd been in a similar situation locally, and was saying how even getting taxis across town at short notice is a nightmare - so offered my own taxi services! It's basically a huuuugely expensive insurance policy.

But it will be paid off in October :) and that will be another chunk of pay freed up for debt busting :j

Oh yes, it is good for things like that definitely.

I'm currently looking at new shelves for my living room and trying to find bargains on ebay. However I really need a car to get them home, I would normally try and battle through on the bus (I still wonder how I managed to get my sewing machine home on 2 buses, it weighs a ton and I struggle to lift it onto my table) as even I can see my limits.

I do have a friend who lives near me but I can't ask her to drive for miles to pick some shelves up for me.

I shall have to decide what to do....

Make up, can you get a wee Ikea delivery?

Well done on the budgeting girls. Rosa my haircuts get booked for the first few days of every month and they're on the spreadsheet so they're counted out of my budget before I think about my spendy money IYSWIM. I go to a trainee at a posh salons training academy and let them hack away at my pixieish cut. I pay them £17 plus £2 tip for this and I love having nice hair. I like it but men always say thinks like 'Have you ever had long hair?'. 'Aye and you know Crystaltips, well imagine her after a heavy shower' is my answer!!!!

Yes you can, certainly if you offer petrol money and dinner in return!

Or see if you can combine the trip with something else in the area.

Wow, how do you manage to keep a pixie cut with curls? I tried that once and let's just say it didn't work out! I got mini spirals and looked like a Wensleydale sheep!

Although I am too lazy to do any form of proper styling which probably doesn't help. Have now grown it long again as that means it gets dried naturally and trimmed every 3 months ish. It has occasional Crystaltips moments, but only rarely :D

LOL at that look Rosa. It's not curly when it's this short but any longer than this and it's a nightmare!
