Surely those with the best manners display them to all, whether it's reciprocated or not? But I expect that's even more codswallop.

Incidentally I asked DH if it was ever acceptable to swear at children, and he said that in his opinion swearing was ALWAYS rude. I don't think I have EVER heard him swear, not even a b_____ h___, which is my usual response to extreme and unexpected pain!

Ah, I suspect that the good ship Mayflower, which set sail from Plymouth all those years ago, would have welcomed people like yourselves so full of moral fortitude, such an example to the savages of the "New World".
Sadly that ship was lighter by a couple of poor souls, who had to stay on merry England's shores, had to put up with the profanity of the lower classes as they dealt with the drudgery of common life.
Whenever I come across a young scallywag in the street, a young urchin with ruddy cheeks, no doubt up to no good, I shall say - "Fear not young sir, do your worst, and be well assured that this day, no curse shall be issued from my lips", for I shall be proud in the knowledge that no matter the slight or insult hurled in my direction, I shall turn the other cheek and walk on, because that would be what Savvysue would have done.;)

school playground where adults are employed and have signed up to and have committed to following a set of standards is different from a public park. In the school there are some discipline options available that Andy wouldnt have been able to make.

its not illegal in itself to swear, so the rest of the debate boils down to personal opinion on whether it was appropiate - going on what was written here I say it was justified and I have also sworn at kids and it has solved the problem straight away - rosy language and pleading would have given the 'wolf pack' the smell of fear they are looking for.

    "wolf pack" now. Good grief.

The children got out of the way when sworn at, I accept that.
I find it unacceptable that they should have been sworn at.

    No more no less.

And what makes here, as a mere dinner lady, so special that she deserves people to let her through doors? The headteacher I could understand, but not a dinner lady!

hey, as a tummy-centric school-dinner loving schoolchild I would certainly make friends with dinner lady before head any day of the week (and particularly on Thursdays which was steak & kidney pudding)
