I am going to do the one in Worcester, just need to make sure I will have someone to look after DD at that day before I send the entry form.

I found couple of 5k evening races near here, just need to find out if my baby sitter is available so that I could do at least one of them as unfortunately don't have a parkrun at my doorstep.

Hi everyone - been a VERY long time since I last posted on here(!) but have been having a few 'issues':rotfl:

Anyway - wouldn't mind picking your brains about running with low iron levels - anyone else dealing with this? My doctor has put me on iron tablets and given me a very stern talking to ;) - to be fair tho, my levels are extremely low and probably have been for months - which could explain why my legs just stop running at around the 40-45 minute mark, even when I'm feeling fine and not really tired.

Apart from that, am down to do the 10k on July 11th, and still holding out a bit of hope that I will be able to manage it - but at present am nowhere near the 10k mark. We'll see anyway.

SO - would love some wisdom on the iron issue.

Anyone coming up to Morecambe for the Cross Bay Challenge (half marathon) tomorrow?
My first time doing it and only my second official half marathon so a wondering what to expect!

I know I can do the distance but the sand and water combo could be interesting....

Rupe - running depletes iron levels in the serum (Ferratin) so you must also get this checked as its your bone marrow level of iron and it will leach away to 0 if you are not careful! This is bad for tiredness, but also can lead to serious injuries such as stress fractures.

Iron tablets are hard to absorb so make sure you eating plenty of vitamin C. No caffine and no fizzy drinks will also help as these both inhibit absorbtion

Make sure you adjust your diet to take in more iron in the long run though - you shouldnt be on tablets permenantly as they are bad for you stomach...plenty of red meat and liver will help (if you are veggie its time to accept that you must eat meat to keep up training at decent levels).

You may also want to speak to your docs about stopping running while your levels build back up...but I suppose they would have advised this at the initial consultation if it was necessary

Thanks becky - I have to admit it was a bit of a surprise and is taking me a while to get my head round. I have become a red meat fiend(!) in order to try and build my levels up - and yes the iron tablets are already letting my stomach know that they are there;)

I think I will go back to the doctors and check a few more things. I'm tending to go for a run ONLY when I feel like it (as opposed to trying to follow a proscribed plan) - but even then although running makes me feel really good in myself, it takes me ages to recover physically at the moment.

Hi everyone - I've not been on here for a little while either :o

I haven't managed to get a lot of running done - like mascott I've been under the weather. A respiratory virus and laryngitis followed a week or so later by a stomach bug so I'm taking it easy until I've managed to shake it all off.

I did 6 miles on Saturday and 8 on Sunday, have had a rest day today and will try a longer run tomorrow.

Hope you are all enjoying the slightly cooler weather :D

Since bupa I have done 1.5 miles and won't be able to get any done until next Tuesday (unles I manage to sneak out on Sunday morning for a 7 mile run). And there is nothing wrong with me just life interfering too much.

    Hi Simply
I am still not back to 100% but at least my leg is finally pain free with the long lay off.

I am going for it tomorrow, and I really cant wait.
I will go for an easy 10k round london.

if thats ok then I am sticking with 10k distances for a while, and then matbe a couple of longer 10-12milers dotted about......but hey.....lets not get ahead of ourselves...........:)

weird........my virus has turned into a dodgy belly too.........i think it was you passing on these viruses after all.

good luck to all those new face who have been getting out there........sorry, no advice on the iron, but what Becky says seems sensible.....plenty of liver.........yum yum.

Oooh sorry mascott- didn't mean to share my germs round. Glad you're feeling a bit better - I hope the 10k goes well tomorrow. ;)

I did a nice, slow 12 miles this morning in the pouring rain - my favourite :D

Marru - that's much less than is in my training schedule but never mind I'll soon be back on track. It does prove one thing though - I need to get a life :rotfl:
