update.....i am in!! great news....although it is very expensive, it will be great to run with my mates who are much fitter than me, but aiming at under 2 hours which is my target.
one of them is a very very good athlete, but a sprinter, so it will be fun trying to beat him....(unlikley)

it also works out well with my marathon training, that week i drop to 12 miles for my long run....(i know its supposed to be recovery week....oh well....!!!) it will spur me on with my killer month.

Well, I did my first parkrun this morning. With mixed results really. Over 60 people turned up and they all looked like "proper runners". They said go and everybody whizzed off up the path leaving me in their wake. But remembering the "all are welcome" line I decide to plod on at my own pace and was 3rd from last after 2.5K. Then I got a horrible cramp in my lower abdomen with a feeling of needing to go to the loo sad.gif. I started to walk and then tried jogging again but every time I tried to run again the feeing got worse. I thought I was going to have to try to find a bush. After 5 mins or so it started to ease off so I started jogging slowly again. I suspect my time will be around 37 or 38 mins. I was last to finish, and I didn't feel too good seeing lots of people running back up the the path when I still hadn't crossed the finish line.
So if I go back next week I'm going to take an Imodium before I leave home just in case dry.gif
Good wine needs to breathe, if it stops breathing try mouth to mouth.

  • 16 miles on a cold, sunny morning for me today and very pleasant it was too. We must be well into the running season now - I don't think I've ever seen so many people out on a Sunday morning. :D

How did the races go today ev, Hannah and Idio?

No race for me today: spent the day in casualty, seems I have 3 broken ribs ( 1 in 2 places) mmmmmmm that explains the pain. Really annoyed as was looking forward to Leith Hill.

Thanks for asking Simply, Well I completed the distance today, no idea of time and it wasn't a good run for me either. From early on (during the 1st mile) I was aware of a niggle on the outside of my knee, I kept going but once we hit the 10m marker I had to admit defeat and walk, as I was in a lot of pain. I did complete the distance though so I am happy about that. It was a beautiful day, clear blue sky, warm & sunny.

Well done for getting round, anyway, Hannah...here's hoping the next one's a bit more comfortable for you :)

    My race was postponed...boo!

Running update: Ate a lot of cake.
  • Oh bad luck Hannah - how is your knee today? Are you still in pain?

Not good news for you either catspaw - that must make breathing a bit painful.

Commiserations Idio - but well done on the cake :D

Can anyone advise a 'newbie' runner please? I started off with the run/walk technique last August and got up to 5 mins run/1 min walk for about 5k. I was then trying to extend the time I could run for and got up to 8 minutes.

However I pulled a muscle at the top of my thigh (groin strain?) about 7 weeks ago. I then didn't run for a week and went out again taking it gently, but pulled it in the same place again. So... since then, it's been 5 weeks and I haven't been running at all, until yesterday. Tried a short running route and guess what, I've pulled it again.

I'm supposed to be in my first 5k race this week - I know I won't be able to run it all as I've never run for that long continuously, but I was hoping to give it my best, rather than have to limp around most of it. Now I'm scared I'm going to keep injuring myself every time I try and run, which is very upsetting as this is the only exercise I've found that I actually enjoy. :(

Could it be my warm up is not good enough? I just do some brisk walking to start, then a few stretches (that were in the 'running made easy' book I started with), then start running veeeery slowly.

Also, can anyone suggest anything that will help ease it before Sunday? (race day) Thanks for reading.
