No running for me tonight but I did have a "first" for me last night. I ran a mile (outside) in 9 mins 38 seconds! It's the first time I've done that in under 10 mins which I know is utter crap compared to some of you guys but I was very pleased (once I'd recovered!!)

Good stuff, k_bagpuss! It's great to hit those milestones. I couldn't have done that 3 years ago. You shouldn't always compare yourself to "some! people, otherwise we'd all despair at being nowhere near the world record. I dare say that running a mile in under 10 minutes is more than "most" people in this country could do! might be a different story in Kenya.

Marru, normally we say to add 10% to the distance a week. Why don't you start increasing the distance now, ahead of your 3 miler? Even if you can't train the week after the 3 miler, that doesn't matter. That would give you plenty of time to get to 10K and over in training, at a comfortable rate of increase. It is normal to run further than race distance in training for all events up to (and including) half marathon. You don't need to "taper" for a 10K in the same way as a marathon, but I would do my last long run a full week before the 10k and not run at all for a couple of days before the race. So let us know if you can start the training (even if interrupted) sooner. And are you running your 2 miles (or is it 2.5) fairly comfortably at the moment?

In running, tapering is the term used to describe the decrease in training distance and intensity before an event. In my case, I will start tapering 3 weeks before the Blackpool marathon, so my last long run is on March 21st. After that, my weekly mileage will "taper off". A marathon training programme is very intense and tiring, the tapering period gives your body time to gain strength from the training programme and to rest, so you are raring to go when the even comes round.

Thanks Beer Tins that was very helpful. :)

I was out today and did practically the same run as on Tuesday. I was a bit surprised that I didn't go further in 25 minutes this time as I was feeling better and lighter. I will go out again on Saturday morning and will do a longer run then. 2 miles feels really good and I feel that I could go further easily.

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.
