    Week 22/30 (Blackpool)

    Tues9/2 Rest Day
    Weds10/2 10K 48:28 (7:49/mile) (Pulse 94)

    Sat13/2 Bushy Park parkrun 5K 18:52 (6:05/mile)(Posn 25th/543) (3rd in Age Group)
    Sun14/2 22.0 Miles 2:56:39 (8:02/mile)

Today was one of the long runs that had no particular purpose except to get the miles in and a little more glycogen sparing adaptation done.

I also had the vague notion that it should be a little progressive but considering that we were out eating and drinking last night the emphasis was on the 'little'.:p

So each of the 5.5 mile loops around the Suffolk countryside went :

    1st 51:30 (9:22/mile)
    2nd 42:45 (7:45/mile)
    3rd 41:47 (7:36/mile)
    4th 40:37 (7:23/mile)

So it fulfilled the objectives set out pretty well.:D

Simply - Listening to your body is always the priority so if that felt like the right thing to do then it probably was.:D

KMS - Looking forward to hearing about the 34k, hope it was a good one.

UK - Uni a reason for not running? Thats when we got our best training done.;)

Alias - Sounds like a good move to keep the workload low until any pain has completely gone, especially if it is more of a pain than a niggle.

Beer Tins - Thats a solid parkrun again, but remember that the 5ks are incidental to the main focus of the week which is the distance run. Certainly go for it when you do the 5ks but dont strain every last sinew or worry about being a few seconds slower. It all looks to be going pretty well at the moment.:)

  • Hope everyone has had a good weekend?

I am trying to mix my training between JogScotland runs (46 mins last week) and gym - body combat/pump & step to try and build up my CV.

As one of the new 'females' I hope that I have not rocked the boat by joining the chat. I have been 'running' with JogScotland for 5 years now, only being able to run 5 mins at the start - now up to the advanced 2 group.

I love running but find it difficult to get out on my own, so use the gym as an alternative.

My Son is on holiday most of this week so won't be able to get to the gym in the morning. If it stays dry - think I will try the, me run he cycle technique :D

Keep safe while out and about.

PS - anyone else use the nike + iPod app? gutted this week when I deleted my run by mistake, so not sure of my distance!

    Hi Julie,

Why would you have rocked the boat, you are most welcome!:D

If you noticed a couple of references to things that happened a long time ago on the thread, the totally uncontentious points involved were that we believe:

    a) If starting out running and carrying more than, roughly, a couple of stone over ideal weight then it is not a good idea to just go out and start running because of the various additional stresses on knees and other joints which could cause long term damage. The best way to start by far is to embark on a steadily increasing workload of walking to strengthen the body's infrastructure and improve the power/weight ratio.

    b) Trying to combine running and dieting, especially the ridiculously low intake versions, is to be avoided. We believe that the body needs fuelling properly by eating whatever the appetite indicates and in the quantities the body requires.

In other words, we are about being fit and healthy, not being focussed on weight loss.

Unfortunately, a few people took exception to these views and, by some strange train of logic stated that this made newbies unwelcome. Why? Absolutely no idea....but there you go!

So keep posting Julie....we love to hear how people are getting on...the more the merrier!:D:D

  • Grumbles

Was a tad late getting to the race today as in race start 11am parked car half a mile from finish 10:45 so grabbed stuff and ran to enter. Quick toilet stop, it was needed trust me, then ran to the start which is about half a mile away. Run to enter was not exactly slow, run to the start was a bit more sedate.

Got to the start with about 5 mins to spare, wasn't last there though as others were still faffing at the finish when i left for the start, not enough time for Garmin to lock on in the middle of Keswick. Set off, possibly a bit to fast wink_smiley.gif well for the length of this race way to fast, eased back a bit and Garmin woke up inside half a mile to record er 5 miles in 3 minutes lol.

Reset it and carried on going and erm supposedly managed a 8:25 odd first mile after the reset. Didn't think i was going that fast but i eased off anyway. Next two miles were 9:15ish pace which was fine but a little after the 5k drinks point my left calf was aching.

Eased back some more and walked up the short steeper bits but it wasn't easing off. Felt rather tight so having dropped to the back and then getting further behind with two large hills to go up and down yet i decided i'd get to the 10k point and stop to avoid any real damage. This i did in about a hours worth of running and was driven home by that marshall via the route and passed the leader at th 30k mark. Got to the finish and i was there barely 5 mis when the leader came in in a time of 2:09:40ish, not bad for 34k plus a extra 600m this year as a bridge is closed. Course record is 2:06 i think.

Not entirely sure what was up with the calf, dont see how its down to a little to fast start as i eased off to a comfortable pace, well bar the calf grumbles. Plus it wasn't early on before i slowed down. Doesn't seem to hurt or ache at the moment either. Perhaps it was one of those days. Will explore tomorow with a wee run to see whats what i think.

Ah KMS sorry to hear you had to withdraw - having many DNFs in my time I think the best thing is just not to think about it too much and try to carry on with the training :)

Hope the calves arent too bad on the run today!

  • Morning all :hello:

The last week for me looked a bit like this...

    Sun 7th - 3 miles, 30:29 (10:10min/mile)
    Mon 8th - 3 miles, 29:12 (9:44min/mile)
    Wed 10th - 4 miles, 38:56 (9:45min/mile)
    Thu 11th - 2.65 miles, 26:23 (9:57min/mile)
    Sat 13th - 16 miles, 02:55:03 (10:54min/mile) :j

I didn't have the best start on Saturday, didn't sleep well, and managed to fall off a kitchen worktop, break a cupboard door and annoy OH within half an hour of getting up (don't ask)! :o Felt really sluggish when I started off but got into it by about 4 miles. Turning round half way was really hard mentally, especially as one of my socks was rubbing a bit and I was really tempted to nip into the house to change them! 8-9 miles were pretty horrible but then I got into it again and started to really enjoy it. Had to have a quick toilet stop in local park (in the public toilets not in the bushes!) - think I drank too much before heading out which probably added a minute or so - don't want to do that again as my legs went all tingly when I sat down! Pretty much loved miles 10-14, the last couple were hard but I was generally :D Checked watch a couple of times on the way.. 4 miles - approx 44 mins, 10 miles - 1 hr 46 mins, 12 miles - 2 hr 12 mins - so my pace was fairly steady. Muscles were very tight Sat night/ early Sun morning, felt like they were all about half their normal length :rotfl: but after a bit of gardening and walking yesterday they had loosened off and today they feel tired but OK! I do have a slightly painful injury though - my sports bra was rubbing in one place and it's a bit owww

Congratulations Red that must be a massive confidence boost for the Kilomathon :D:D

Vaseline is the way forward for preventing bra chaffing I have found ;)

Catspaw - well done on the Silver medal too :D

Okay I have mapped my Blackpool route for next Sunday:
    http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/gb/blackpool/811126622887924040

Bearing in mind its done on the satellite view so isnt completely right on map view - but Rich do you think it will get in the way of the race? I've tried to stay inland on the way back but I'm just a bit worried about the last 3 miles (I suppose if I'm in the way I can always stop at 22 but that kind of defeats the object ;))

Definitely, I know I can get round it now :D I might have to try that, it's never happened before but I've never worn it for so long. Talking of which, have any of you (I guess the ladies but won't assume!) tried the new Shock Absorber bra which is specifically designed for running? It looks very comfortable and well-made but is £36!
