OK, I make it 6 members for the "real world" runclub/site. How many do we need before we actually go ahead with it? 10 members?

I seem to remember us talking about this way back. Let's make it happen this time!

It was indeed, BT, but the reasons for deciding not to continue pursuing the idea was because it wasnt shaping up as intended.

To recap, what I feel it should be about is enouraging people to develop long term fitness and a healthy lifestyle through running. The word that we cannot use too much is consistency.

There are always new challenges whether a complete beginner or someone who's been around the block a few times (and then a few more times:p) and at whatever level someone chooses to partake.

When the idea was previously floated there was a long list of people who came out of the woodwork and were lapping it up and loved the idea of being part of a 'running club'. But it quickly became apparent that it was no more than an illusion. The vast majority were 'dieters' who had pretty much no interest in running at all. Thats absolutely fine but I certainly dont want to be part of a slimming club, there are more appropriate places for that sort of thing.

Any talk of training and improvement were dismissed as 'elitist' !!!

So, moving on 12 months, there is now a core of people who actually enjoy running and reap the benefits as a result.

So the circumstances are different to the last time the idea was floated.

    Mon - 6.24 miles in 56:47 8:56 mins/mile
    Tues - 8.32 miles in 78:01 9:23 mins/mile
    Weds - 1 mile in 9:41
    Thurs - 8.21 miles in 76:51 9:14 mins/mile

Another solid run - I seem to have a slight muscle strain on the top of my right thigh which given all the speedwork recently isnt a surprise but there's no point making it worse so I just settled for another easy run instead :)

Doing quite well on the miles this week after last which is good too :D

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

I only entered the GNR because I was after a free mirror place I never dreamt I would be lucky(?) enough to get a main ballot place. Well tbh i'm not so sure its lucky :rotfl:. I'm going to be having nightmares about being passed by smoothies, rhino's and pantomine horses etc .

Last year I just beat the Loch Ness Monster! :rotfl:

My sister's fiance ran it in 1h 47 and was overtaken at the last minute by a sunflower :D

Wow, did I misjudge that this morning!! I set out in a long sleeve tee, running tights and gloves and realised within minutes that I was freezing. Half a mile later I noticed it was snowing again ....... think I should have worn a jacket :rotfl: I usually stop at 8 miles and walk a little way to cool down but there was such a strong icy wind that I ran all the way home - don't think much cooling was needed.

That's another good run Becky - take care of that thigh.

evab - stop creeping around and bound right in - good to see you again :p:D

It looks as though the planning is coming together and it's encouraging to see so much enthusiasm. Definitely think we should have a 'Rant' section and perhaps a 'rant of the week'. :)

Hello the the newbies who have come out of lurkdom - it's nice to have some new faces around the place.

Well thats that nasty little virus put to bed!:D:D

The legs were a bit heavy in the second half but thats only to be expected - the pulse shows that things are pretty much back to normal.

Linda - 'Love Exercise, Love Food'.......... 'I Run So That I can Eat Pizza'

    Not much difference really..;)

Becky - 24 miles already with 22 planned for Sunday and still 2 days in between.......could be a big total this week.

Simply - At least you got another 0.38 miles in your training diary!! The stats suggest that the cold didnt affect you too much. And I think we would probably need a 'Rant Of The Day' with the amount of ranting we do!:p

Tee hee am aiming for around 60 miles - trust you to notice :p

Well done Simply - some good running there in tough conditions! Nice to see you back to your usual self Rich

I dont think its any shame if you are beaten by someone wearing a costume Linda and KYCU - I got beaten by 1 second by a little miss sunshine at London  I think the fastest women ever to wear a costume was 3:21 or something!!!

We did a 7 mile run last night at run club.
Felt really energised and not only kept up with the 2nd lead group for the first time but at the bottom of the long slog up Kings Rd I actually overtook them :T

When we got back to the club they said "What did you have for lunch and can we have some please?" :D

    Hi all,

Entered the GNR 2010 through the Daily Mirror and the General Ballot, both times unsucessful so thats me finished on that. I would like to run it again, but the hasssle of getting sponsorship is too much, with getting back to the uk to run the event.

Started running again, really struggling to put in 2.5 miles without stopping, thats 4 months off running for you. Out again tomorrow, the temperature was 18 degrees today, so think im getting use to the weather now.

The aim is to run a 1/2 marathon on the 20th Feb, with 1 a week later, and another 4 weeks later (limassol & paphos)

The distance im covering is 5 miles, which pretty much is run-walk-run-walk but ill get there..and will probably cover the event so i get a t-shirt and another 1/2 marathon under the belt.
  • Rich, I think consistency and friendliness are the two things that help here.

we could look at developing a way of measuring peoples consistency. can we "virtually" reward people for sticking to their plans.

how about a few real life get together where we try a different park run each month

i am happy to pay and offer technical help. I have a scientific calculator and a set square.

still trying to think of a good name....

by the way....skived off tonight! no consistency prize for me.
