It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

    Hi all,

Well, after spraining my ankle last Tuesday, I got out for my first run on Monday lunchtime (a week after the last!), then the same again yesterday. Both runs were fine, but the ankle was feeling a bit tender (not sore) still. So today I thought I'd do my 16 miler that was supposed to be done on Sunday on my way to work. The idea was to do the 9 miles to work and do a 7 mile circuit roughly circling my office, which I could break off easily. However, the ankle was starting to feel tender again so I just did the 9 miles to the office.

So here's the question; should I stop my runs when the ankle feels like this or is it nothing to worry about? Like I said it's not really "sore" as such. I just don't want to risk aggravating the injury. If you think it's OK, I'll try the long run again tomorrow, unless you think I might as well wait till Sunday now. That would be a full 2 weeks after my last "long" run.

Also, should I avoid intense sessions (e.g. parkrun)?

It's tough finding the balance between avoiding injury and trying to stay on course with the training plan!

rich, I wanted to point out that you missed some of my parkruns on your list and marked one of them as "Reading". I don't know what we pay you for, sometimes ;)

These are my parkruns this year so far:
    02/01/2010 Bromley parkrun 22:44
    09/01/2010 Roundshaw Downs parkrun 26:39
    16/01/2010 Bromley parkrun 23:34
30/01/2010 Bromley parkrun (not reading!) 22:24

becky, well done on beating your 10k PB. However, you've also beaten my 10k PB, which I'm less chuffed about :p I know what I need to do ;)

Newbies, welcome. Hope you've had the advice you were looking for. If not, just post follow up questions and someone will answer!

    Sorry about that BT :p

On the parkruns Rich only puts up new pb ones I think so that could be why some are missing...I'm sure he will answer about the ankle though :)

Oh and on another thing - who's size 7? I'm not getting on with my new trainers AT ALL so am going to order some new ones which means I'll have some sauncony jazz size 7s in womens if anyone wants them - only worn about 3/4 times (depending on how long it takes to deliver my new shoes).

They have an air bubble in the heel which is making me flat footed but if you are more of a heel runner then they would be perfect!

OK, makes sense. It would fill up pretty quickly otherwise! He still needs to change the venue from Reading to Bromley, though. Not that I'm demanding or anything :)

I would say that you're describing a niggle rather than an injury, which is the body's way of saying 'Hold on a minute, whats this extra stuff you're asking me to do?'

Niggles are managed rather than rested. In other words, if it improves between sessions and then during the next session it emerges again, but not quite as much as the last time, then it should be fine.

Carry on with as much as you can manage. In the meantime increase the bloodflow to the area by putting your foot alternately into hot and cold water (as hot and as cold as you can bear for 30 seconds in each) - works like magic.:D

Re the parkrun listings - I only list those that represent new PBs, otherwise the list would be swamped by parkruns and hit the maximum post size in no time.

And yes, go and get Becky's 10K time beaten.....mind you, she'll only rise to the challenge and increase that WAVA some more!

Thanks rich. Well, it's the result of the sprain, rather than due to any extra work, as the workload has dropped dramatically over the last week! However, it does seem to be getting better, so I think I'm fine to push on. Just wanted some other opinions on that. I'll try the hot/cold thing too. How long do you repeat that for?

As for Becky's 10k time - yeah, don't I know it. I'm already sweating over my 5k time as it is!
