To say that all the other Manchester runs were cancelled, conditions this morning at Woodbank were perfectly acceptable - totally white with a few inches of compacted snow but definitely runnable. The conditions added about 1:30 to times.

Because of the other cancellations the turnout was pretty good, probably 60-70 runners with a temp of about -5c (quite warm compared to what Manchester recorded earlier in the week).

Becky enjoyed her run, finishing 2nd lady in about 26:09, and KMS successfully completed the first leg of his '3 athletic events in a day' adventure, a 1 mile and 60m race to go this afternoon.

Looking forward to seeing the pics of this one (they will be very white) but the highlight of this morning must be the scenery we saw coming over the top of the pennines - breathtaking views!:D

Chickadee - Nope, there were no funny looks from motorists, simply because there were no motorists out in it! 'Slow Short Runs' sounds good to me.:D

  • Sometimes you look out the window and think....

    BUG*ER THIS....

Then you log on and sanity is restored....of course its perfectly normal to run down a main road in snow rather than sitting down and polishing off the mincepies.

Off to get all my clothes on. Thinking of gluing drawing pins to my trainers.

Anyone want to bet on number of times I stack it.....(5 miles or three hours whichever comes first!)

Good luck to the rest of you nutters.

  • Well done Rich, Becky and kms it sounds as though you all enjoyed the race - the scenery is great in this weather isn't it??

Cross training for me today as we took our bikes out across the New Forest for an hour - brilliant sunshine and the forest looked lovely with all the ice and snow :D It was great to see so many people out enjoying themselves - there were loads of peeps out with their sledges flying down the hills ...... and, no, I wasn't tempted. :p

Have a good run mascott - and, fear not, we are not alone. I think I've seen at least one other runner every time I've been out this week - that makes us normal doesn't it?? Hope your drawing pins stay stuck on :rotfl:

Well I ran Roundshaw this morning and it was tough! Should have gone to Banstead! Finished 22nd with a time of 26:39. No one managed a time under 20 today and no surprise. The parts with compacted snow were OK, but the fresh snow actually added quite a bit of drag slowing us down. Not to mentioned the inefficient running style required on parts. Still, I'm reasonably pleased with that.

Will probably have to run on the road (as opposed to pavement) for my long run tomorrow. The pavements are still completely coated in ice round here.

Well done to everyone who's made it out over the last few days!

Beer Tins managed to get a parkrun in as well, completing Roundshaw in 26:39.

It sounds like the snow was quite deep from the wooded bit to the finish.

Edit: Bug-ger, you just beat me to it.:p

Well done Rich, Becky, KMS and Beer Tins on your parkrun this morning. The conditions didn't seem to affect your times much (except for you BT).

Simply - your bike ride in the New Forest sounds perfect! How lovely that it is so close for you. We had a camping holiday there a few years ago, we loved it. I'd love to go back. We stayed at the Red Shoot Camping Park near Linwood, it was lovely.

I'm not sure what I'll do today. I may have a rest day and run tomorrow. I was hoping to do about 8 miles but it will have to be in a park or somewhere, as I'm not doing that on a treadmill and I don't want to do it on the roads, it would take an age and be dangerous.

I've seen a few other runners out and about too, Simply. In fact I saw one this morning as I left the hairdressers.

    All done.
    5miles 49 mins
    0 Falls.

It was suprisingly uneventful. The hardy shoppers had created a nice brown crusty snow path that was pretty grippy.
Looks like tomorrows 10 miler is on.!

Simply....very jealous i love the New Forest, I have run there and it was one of my favourite runs.

  • Well done mascott - that was a good pace on the ice/snow - it would appear that the drawing pins did the trick :rotfl:

Love the photos Rich - I like to see what clothes others run in as most runners I see when I'm out seem to be kitted out in thick jackets, etc. It's reassuring that others wear a little less although I'm not as brave as Becky. Shorts, brrrrrr!!!

chick/mascott - I used to live/work in the New Forest and never tired of it. We live a little further away now but it's only a short drive so it's close enough for us to still enjoy it.
