Salome - I can well understand how you felt after that candle party. I'm exactly the same with anything perfumed. The soap powder aisle gets me every time and, even worse, are air-fresheners! They make me cough and wheeze like an old lady. I find I acclimatise after about fifteen minutes but it's awful at the time. In America they take things like that seriously and lots of workplaces ban their workers from wearing perfume. I think the problem is that lots of products are made using chemicals these days and not the natural ingredients they used years ago. I read in one article that the way some air-fresheners work is not to mask the smell but rather to paralyse the mechanism in the nose to stop you smelling it! Another said that some air-fresheners have been known to cause epilepsy in dogs! All of this convinces me that they are just not healthy to have in the home. There are a lot of things I don't use these days because of the artificial perfumes in them. I used to think that I must have developed a sensitivity to things as I got older, but I think it's more that the producers have changed the ingredients they use.

  • Hi all
Just finished tea, DS now in bed, along with his sister who is feeling slightly better but still v cuddly and sorry for herself...she's actually eaten a banana today and drunk significantly more than yesterday, but she's still a poorly bunnykins. Dosed up with Calpol and cough medicine and hoping she's a bit better again in the morning.

Been training on domestic abuse today too, and am exhausted. was meant to finish at 4 - I walked out at 4.30, leaving them to the remainder of an argument...ho hum. No doubt I shall get into bother for leaving before it had finished, but I had places to go and poorly people to sort out.

Thanks for all your comments on Flora, heaven knows how I shall part with her at Easter as she's cute, but I shall grin and bear it. Anne - she's 18" tall from head to tip of toe, still 4" longer than DD was when she was born!

Got the 20 Knitted Cakes book in the post this morning, and they all look scrummy. Might have a go when I have finished DS's aran cardigan (back and left front done) AND the baby blanket I have on the needles at the moment.

Anyway, cup of tea calling and I shall then see what I feel like ppicking up. Bath with wine and candles later too...

    Huggles to everyone,

    Dawn xx

    Hi everyone.

PTB - glad that little one is feeling better.

Chalky - your puppets are so cute!

Maytaurus - I hope you are OK?

Elaine - hope these last few weeks are not too uncomfortable for your DD.

Pam - hope you are well, too. We haven't heard from you for a while.

I'm still working on the Easter bunnies for the grandchildren. I've nearly finished crocheting the last one then I shall sew them all up. The patterns I've used are really simple amigurumi ones; it's just finding the time that's the problem - my daytimes are so busy! I've picked up some more freelance writing work so that will mean even less time until the house is properly organised and I don't have to help DH so much. Still, the extra work means extra pennies for the wool fund so I'm not complaining! I need to work out a proper timetable, I think. For the next week or so, DH will be tiling and painting so I shouldn't have to help him with that. Then the work starts on the kitchen. At the moment my computer is in the room next to the kitchen but we will be knocking down the dividing wall to make the kitchen bigger, so the computer will be moved into the newly-renovated hall. I'll be able to carry on working and - hopefully, knitting and crocheting - but I have no idea how meal times will go! Still, I have been promised that the bulk of the work will only take a 'few days'. And it will give me a really big kitchen/dining room which will be lovely when we have visitors. I'm dreading the upheaval but looking forward to the finished result. DH's brother is coming up from the south of France for a week in April to help with the work. DS2 and his family will be out in May - not sure when, it depends how long it takes to get DGD2's passport. DS1 and his family will be here in July.

Those visits from the boys and their families will just about keep me going until we return to the UK in September for my Mum's big 80th birthday party/family reunion. We had a party for her 75th which was brilliant because the whole extended family was there, so we are all really looking forward to it. I want to make something special and a bit different for my Mum but don't know what that will be yet. Considering that, with her health problems (caused by TB), she wasn't supposed to get past the age of 7, then the doctors said 16, then she was told she shouldn't have any children (she had four of her own and fostered dozens!), reaching her 80th is something to celebrate. She nursed my Dad through a dreadful illness until he died when they were both 38, leaving her with a young family, so she has been through such a lot, bless her, yet she is always so upbeat and positive. We're hoping that my sister and BIL will be able to bring her over this year, too, so it could be a busy year for visitors! Plus the friends who stayed last year will be coming back here, too. I won't have time to be homesick, hopefully!

Well, yesterday the weather reached 19 degrees here - it was a truly lovely day, so we're hoping that spring really has arrived at last! It makes such a difference, doesn't it, when the sun is shining, especially after what seems like a really long winter.

Anyway, I've 'mioliered' enough. Will catch up with you all later.

    Morning all,
Kathy 19 degrees, oh I wish. Your mum's story is similar to mine, my dad was first ill at the age of 40 and died aged 57 and she nursed him all that time. She died a week before her 89th birthday. Aren't mum's wonderful.
Chalky the puppets are lovely, so are the flowers. You're a star.
Love to all, hope the sun shines for you, xxx

    hello to all the newbies

didnt have time for any knitting last night as it was eldest DS parents evening so we were rushing backwards and forwards round the school, but it was worth it he had a glowing report, and its always so nice to hear when people say what a lovely polite mature lad he is. A couple of other teachers even stopped us to congratulate him on the performance he did at the show last weekend
