Hi Chalky 75 yep I always crochet on airplanes. The first time I tried I thought I might get the hook taken off me (especially as i use a metal hook) but I've never even been asked. I think it's because the staff don't really know what crochet is or anything like that. i think it might be different if i was knitting because the needles are more pointed But a hook is no more damaging than a pen i would have thought!0

I am loving this thread, even though its taken me weeks to get through it all. I have just taken up crochet again years after my gran taught me how do it. I am doing granny squares but a few different designs, just variations on what I actually know, but I am enjoying it and its keeping me away from the biscuit tin a little bit more than usual.:hello:  please play nicely children !0

Found some new patterns that I thought you'd all enjoy.

Hi everyone.
I hope you are all coping with the bad weather and that those who have had nasty falls are not feeling too sore.
Sunny Girl - thinking about you and your family.
Pam - sending lots of (((hugs))) to you.
Jean - that view from your kitchen window is amazing -so much snow. I hope you are managing OK and that your DH and DS have arrived safely at their destinations.
Kinsey - there are some lovely patterns in your link. Thanks for posting it. I love the heart rug (I'm already thinking about pressies for next Christmas!)
Kiraroo - have a great time in Costa Rica. My DIL1 went there last March - she's a geography teacher and went there on a field trip with the college she works for. I warn you - she came back exhausted because there was such a lot to see - and she went white-river rafting, too! I shall add your squares to the update, thanks.
Just a word for the newbies - if you post your updates in red it makes them easier for my tired eyes to find them when I'm updating!
Chalky - 48 squares! I've only done two so far! Mind you, I've had a nagging cough that has been disturbing my sleep for ages and I keep dozing off when I settle down to crochet PLUS I keep having to be DH's labourer! Today he's laying the floor in our new temporary sitting-room - last night, I helped him move out all the furniture that we've been storing in there and have dared him to interrupt me today! We had such a busy day yesterday and I lost count of the times he kept asking me to 'just give me a hand for two minutes'. He doesn't seem to operate on earth minutes - he has his very own idea of time!
Re: crocheting on the plane; you could always use a wooden crochet hook - surely that couldn't be seen as an WMD? I hope your plans go ahead today but I rather suspect you'll be posting from the UK for the next few days! Good luck!
Salome - well done to your DD on her knitting. Be careful in that snow when you go to church. I'm glad you made it to Bath and back safely. I love that city (I used to live in Weston-super-Mare) and we often used to go there for shopping, so I know how busy it can be!
Welcome to JennyJelly - I'm glad the loopa mystery was cleared up for you!
Welcome also to Babyblooz! Lovely name but I hope the blues have gone!
Donny-Gal - could you not experiment with the scarf, by knitting the wavy bit, then changing to a cable pattern, then continuing with the wavy bit, IYKWIM? We're still not sure when we're leaving for the UK. A lot depends on the people we will be staying with; they have things going on this month and I think we'll be making our plans at the last minute. If we are still around when you travel through France (I think you said in your email before Christmas that it would be around the 18th?) it would be great to meet up. I'll try and let you know before you leave the UK next weekend. If it's too last minute to plan anything definite, you would be more than welcome to call in for lunch or dinner, depending on when and where you are at the time!
Dally - well done on your blanket!
Well, I have some online work to do today, and I really must catch up with wrapping the rest of the pressies we are taking back to the UK whenever we actually get there! Fortunately, the rotten cough I've had didn't wake me up last night so, if I can catch up on lost sleep, I may feel like doing more during the day!
Anyway, I hope everyone has a good day. Lots of (((hugs))) to the MIAs - we haven't heard from DPixie, LC Wilson and a few others for a while, so I hope they are all well.
KathyXX
Thanks for all the updates by the way! Our lovely Jean has done a shiny new spreadsheet for the New Year, so it will be a pleasure to kick that off for 2010. I'll take the figures from anything posted by midnight tonight. Thanks, Jean, you're a star - or should I say, a snow angel!KNIT YOUR SQUARE TOTALS:

Good morning everyone. Had lots of smow over the last 3 days and more forecast. It's not funny anymore. Jean the view from your window is a bit scary, bet the dogs like it though. Our big one does, but the little one gets a cold tummy, so I have to rub it dry for her.
Pam I felt the same when my Mum died, no purpose to my life, and on top of that my best friend died two weeks after Mum. I completely lost my way, so I do understand how you feel. This thread has helped in giving a reason to knit, so perhaps you will find that as well. My thoughts and sympathy are with you.
Chalky I hope your plans for today go well, and that you have a good journey.
Salome I hope family problems are sorted, it can be so difficult and uncomfortable sometimes can't it?
In Search of Me how does Isoke like the snow. Does your new lodger move in soon?
mioliere I too have personal experience of men's 'two minute' jobs, three hours later. There is some nice patterns on that site, I liked the sewing accessories, and some of the squares.
maytaurus hope you are well.
The stray cat that lives in a box in my garden has finally decided to come in I'm pleased to say, I was worried that I'd find it frozen in the box. Box has a flokati rug and woolly jumpers in, but still. Dogs are not impressed, but I had cats when they came so they'll get used to it.
Wedding went off well considering the weather, at one point it started snowing heavily and we weren't sure we'd get there, but made it ok.
Big welcome to all new friends, at this rate it will be a record year. I wonder sometimes where this country would be without volunteers.
Love to everyone, try to keep warm, xxxx0 -

I've only just discovered this thread and just wanted to say how friendly it feels!
I've been knitting little baby vests for ages, probably done about 40 or so which have gone, via a friend of my mum's, to a project supporting lone young mums in Africa - the stigma of unmarried motherhood is apparently still quite strong there and many young girls are thrown out by their parents when their pregnancy is discovered.
If anyone would like to knit these there is a standard pattern which I will be happy to post. I don't know the correct address for the charity I'm afraid as mine just go via my mum and her friends, but I will try to find out if anyone is interested, or I would be more than happy to pass on any vests which anyone would like to send to me. PM me if you would like an address (board guides I don't know if I'm supposed to offer this, please tell me if not.)Oh dear, here we go again.0 -
Afternoon all,
thanks for such a lovely warm welcome! Have spent a few pleasant hours researching patterns on the web and i have found a few for teddy bears and hats to get me started for charitys. plan is (in theory) to make enough items to fill a shoebox (of which i seem to have lots floating around at the mo) before i post off to somewhere... possibly lovinghands. still searching for a crochet burial bunting pattern i like for angel babies but i will find the right one when i am meant to, i guess.
chalky: happy hooker? hmm... that reminds me of a careers assembly i had when i was at hgh school and a particularly strong-minded girl stood up and said she wanted to "do soliciting"... 5 mins later when the rest of us had got up from rolling around on the floor laughing someone explained to her what it meant and, very red-faced, she stood up and said that what she meant was that she wanted to become a lawyer. still makes me smile to this day, remembering that... :-)
also made a pink and white fluffy yarn hat (meant for a newbie but wool is very stretchy and made up larger than expected so probably would suit a toddler now, lol) and halfway through a boys hat for a newbie in blue camoflage colour wool that looks lovely already (if i say so myself?) sigh... rain washed away a lot of our snow last night and turned it to ice but its just started hailing heavily again so i expect it will take me a while to de-ice the car for work again tomorrow!
keep warm everyone, i'm looking forward to listening to gardeners world on the radio this afternoon and finishing the baby boys hat, dreaming of when the sun returns so i can plant out flowers and veggies in my little back yard again...

[[PamsPal has, as ever, been a tower of strength, knowing when to leave me be & when to insist - last night, when I got the call that we were needed, despite my protests, her DH got up & dressed to walk me through the icy estate to meet my brother who was picking me up – just how kind is that]]
