I did a diagonal square last night, looks gorgeous. Measured it so one side was 8" long (4mm needles, went up to 68 sts on the diagonal), and then completed the diagonal cast off --- but when it's completed the sides now measure a whopping 10"!!!! Am NOT happy ---
Ho hum,
dawn xx
Thought I`d do my third square a diagonal one. Baaad move- it came out like yours PTB. Fine on the way up and measured 8" - came down again......10" !!!! How did we manage that ???? Can`t understand it at all. I did a Sands blanket earlier this year and it came out the requisite 20" on each side - perfect. Said square was promptly chucked in the wip corner for the momentBah humbug.......
Night night all, see you tomorrow.

ps Hester, the squares are for Chalky who is away on holiday at the moment. She should be back on Monday though.Fully paid up member of S.A.B.L.E.

Good morning everyone.
Welcome back, Chalky - I hope you had a brilliant time. A very Happy New Year to you!
Hester - that's a brilliant start to the squares!
Orkney Star - thanks for the warning about Angel Yarns. I've heard that they've let people down in the past, so it's good to let everyone know not to trust them.
Well, at the moment I'm trying to concentrate on getting WIPs finished, so I'm doing the last few rows of DGS's lapblanket. I finished DGD1's ages ago and I fancy putting their names on their blankets so I'm having to decide whether to embroider them on, or crochet the letters separately and sew them on. Luckily, they have short names (Sam and Lucy)! I suppose I could always cut them out of felt and sew them on, couldn't I? I so wanted to have got them finished by now but that pesky bad back didn't help. Luckily, it's gone now.
Anyway, today's priority, sadly, is the big pile of ironing that I can't ignore any longer - I can tell it's desperate because DH is wearing his 'last resort' t-shirts! I shall get that done first thing; I have soup to make with some veggies that are on their last legs, so that can be bubbling away as I iron, then I shall feel that I've earned the afternoon off to crochet!
I hope you are all keeping warm and safe.

Good morning everyone,
Welcome to dally1, chumbasmum, and kikroo, nice to meet you.
Thanks for that wrning Orkneystar, certainly made interesting reading!
Good luck with ironing pile mioliere, but don't stand there so long that it hurts your back again!
Well I haven't made much progress on knitting or crochet as I have the dreaded cough and cold back again, not long since I finally got rid of it from last time, what a nuisance.
psso I listen to audio books a lot, have quite a few !!!!!! Francis which were my mum's, he was her favourite. Lots of others as well, they are a good idea for crochet.
Had a bit more snow here, not too drastic but there is more forecast.
Have a good day everyone,
Love, xxxx0 -
Sunnygirl, thinking of you and your family, it's very sad. Hope your husband is coping ok.0

From the quick read I have had this afternoon I see I should be welcoming lots of lovely new knitters/crocheters to the forum, come in rest a while enjoy the chat.
I also see I haven't been on for a couple of days - that would be because we are still celibrating, so I have nabbed a couple of minutes to myself and here is a wee poem I have for you all, I will catch up with the posts properly and may even do some knitting when the DH has returned to sea and the DS has returned to the UK (Saturday in both instances).
The year has begun all fresh and new
I'm sitting here wondering just what to do?
Will I start some knitting or crochet or what?
Should I hunt out a pattern? I've rather a lot!
I could start a scarf or even a shawl?
Oh perhaps, I'll just sit and do nothing at all!
...I wish.
Back soon I hope
Jean

Hello everyone:hello:
I’ve been MIA again for a couple of day’s, but the girl’s have taken their Mum and Dad back home so I can have a few relaxing hours (who am I kiddin)????
Well the sheets are all in the WM and the towels are waiting their turn. I must get into town soon to get some buttons for the girls cardis, no-one sell’s the great big colourful one’s locally so it’s always a trip to town. Trouble is I’ll get side-tracked and will just have to get them some jeans to go with the cardi’s, O and a top;)
Kathy – glad to hear your back is better now. You are doing the same as me, working on all the WIP’s, must admit it will be nice to have an empty bag for a change. I have managed to do a few rows on the latest ripple blanket, just a few more to do. Think I’ll do an edging this time, did you edge yours off? I thought of trebles and shells like I did on Mum’s but wanted something different this time.
Chalky - I read your post re: the square's and think it’s a wonderful idea also a good start for the year and maybe every year from now on. sooo I just had to go have a rootle around in my stash and have been happily sorting jazzy colours for a few squares. I did’nt realise I had so much or so many hiding places for it, I swear it multiplies when I’m not looking
SunnyGirl – I am so sorry to hear the news of your MIL, and I am thinking of you all and sending gentle (hugs)
Orkneystar – thanks for the warning, certainly one wool outlet to keep clear of.
Hester – :Twow good start, the way you’re going you will be doing a blanket all on your own
A BIG WELCOME TO... dally1, chumbasmum, kiraroo and Hester and any others newbies I may have missed :wave: nice to see you all, glad you decided to join our happy band, we are all very friendly and love to see new members. So anything you want to know just ask.

P.S....I am off to delete last years figures from in my sig as its the start of a New Year, and we need to start with a clean slate, also it wo'nt confuse the totals for 2010.(and I will remember what I've done):rotfl:0 -
Hi everyone. Well I hope everyone is settling into 2010 and managing to keep warm-- It is certainly colder up here in Chester than in it is in Devon but we have had a lovely time with friends and head hometo Devon in the morning picking up DMIL in Aldridge as we pass!!
I have been busy knitting squares here and am so pleased to think they wont be lonely for too long. What a lovely feeling of collective good. I am sure the bigger ones can be tucked in with any others you post as they will all mould together I am sure. Please don't worry.
Well as we all get back into a bit more normality with our projectsI guess Pippa's idea of clearing sigs is a really good one-- I have not updated mine for ages as been so busy a rippling!! and Curling!!
Happy Days and gentle thoughts to one and all especially SunnyGirl at such a difficult timeTry and do a good deed every day.0 -
Hi everyone and welcome back to the MIA's. Glad you'v enjoyed time with the family, Pippa. I do edge the ripples with a row of single crochet - it makes them look 'finished' and helps to neaten the edges if there have been lots of colour changes.
Chalky - have a safe trip back to Devon. I shall start on my squares soon - I've sorted out the wool I shall use.
Kinsey - ironing done and no back ache afterwards, either! I multi-tasked and had homemade soup simmering away on the hob as I ironed, so lunch was easy. I nearly faltered and left the ironing until tomorrow but I'm so pleased I perservered and did it. I'm feeling quite smug now!
I've done a bit of crocheting this afternoon while DH is finishing off the outside step - it's freezing out there but he's managing as long as the cuppas keep coming!
Anyway, off the put that kettle on again!

Just edited to say - remember we stayed with friends over Christmas? Well, the lady, Karen, has just been told by the doctor that she has swine flu. She has had the jab and will have blood tests tomorrow to confirm. She's had a Tamiflu jab and we're just keeping our fingers crossed that she does not get too ill. She had a breast removed 8 years ago through cancer so her immune system is not perfect. She's a lovely lady, works really hard and, if I know her, it will drive her mad having to take it easy! Coincidentally, her husband's brother is in hospital having had a bad reaction to the H1N1 jab to prevent the flu, so it's worry all round. DH and I have had invitations to have our own jabs, so we are busy deciding whether to go ahead with them now.KNIT YOUR SQUARE TOTALS:

Hi everyone.
Just back from a shopping trip with DD. She`s had to go and buy some new tops for going back to work on Tuesday, nice big streeeeeeetchy ones to cover her expanding middle, some in the sale :Tand some not _pale_ She was horrified a couple of weeks ago to find her jeans suddenly wouldn`t fasten. At least she`s not `eating for two`. Just normal portions, sometimes slightly smaller than she used to in fact.
Well, I ripped back the oversized square this morning and re-did it. Came out just over the 8" with a good bit of wool left - goodness knows what I did - maybe just deceased every other row sometimes. Who knows, but at least Chalky won`t have to resort to too much aggro to beat it into submission:rotfl:.
Off to bring in some logs for the fire before it gets dark and sit down with a cuppa.
See you all later.

ps Kathy, I can see your halo shining from here :A I`ll do mine later -tomorrow - er, sometime, well when it`s absolutely necessary.!!!!!!Fully paid up member of S.A.B.L.E.

I'm going to see mum now with DD, so I'll leave you all with this
No monthly payments and no fees;
Inflation proof, non-taxable,
In fact, it's quite relaxable;
It can't be stolen, won't pollute,
One size fits all, do not dilute.
It uses little energy,
But yields results enormously.
Relieves your tension and your stress
Invigorates your happiness;
Combats depression, makes you beam,
And elevates your self-esteem!
Your circulation it corrects
Without unpleasant side effects.
It is, I think, the perfect drug:
May I prescribe, my friends . . . the hug!
(And, of course, fully returnable!)
