No they don't need to have ribbon on the ventilator bonnets as the hospitals prefer crochet ties instead of ribbon as they can use to hold the tubes

welcome chumbasmum...as a new knitter a square is a good place to start; otherwise a small hat which is knit, purl, decrease...have a look at first posts and you'll see charities you can send to...there are lots! Loving hands new challenges will be up soon so nt sure what the next requests are! My advce would be to do a bit to build confidence...
On that note have undone jumper because the pattern looked really old knitted up so will stop and get one in a shop (have exhausted freebies and am resitricted as rather ample!!) and meanwhile will invesitgate the lovely Mays links and will conquer crochet - its my main crafting aim ts year-that and finishing my quilt! Have decided that I will machine it thoug as will never finish if I hand quilt as planned!
prayers are with you all sunny girl...
ta for linkes may...thought long and hard re keeping isoke as an indoor cat (maily due to next doors dog) but the simple fact is she needs to go out and loves it...a bit like children you sometimes have to let them go a bit even if it pains you...loved the simons cat - he needs to cut the nails me thinks! Isoke currently sitting comfortable puring in my ample bossom!!

Good morning everyone. I'm up early today because I've had an irritating cough that kept waking me up in the night, so I decided to get up in the end and have a cuppa.

Sunny Girl - so sorry to hear about your MIL. (((Hugs))) for her.

Maytaurus - thanks, once again, for some fantastic links, and those lovely words.

SGT - it's good to hear from you. I hope 2010 is good to you.

A warm welcome to Dally and Chumbasmum - it's good to have you with us. Maytaurus has a link to all the tutorials and patterns she has found, as well as links to the charities that take our finished items.

Pam - thanks for your links to squares and stitches.

F1widow - well done on conquering a new pattern!

ISOM - there are some lovely free patterns in a range of sizes for jumpers, cardies, and so on here http://www.elann.com/freepatterns.asp

Well, the temperatures have dropped again here with some snow flurries forecast so I shall do a shop this morning in case we get snowed in. We have a delivery of central heating oil on Monday - a top-up that should see us through until the spring. I see from the forecast for the UK that the cold weather is expected to last another week, so I hope you are all keeping warm.

Well, off for another cuppa then I shall do a bit of crochet until day really gets going.

Maytaurus Thank you for the link for the perfect sweater I have copied it into Word as I too am a larger size & struggle to find nice patterns. I shall make the length slightly longer I think but it's a great pattern thanks :T

Thank you for all your good wishes it means such a lot. I am not going to the care home for long today as my Mum is coming over, which I'm looking forward to. I shall be starting the ventilator bonnet that I cast on last night too. The pattern seems easy enough but if I get stuck I shall shout up :D I am going to learn how to crochet this year and will start by doing the chains for the ties on the bonnets. Thanks for all the links on how to get started.

Have a good day all & keep warm - it's absolutely freezing here

Morning all...thank you both for patterns - alas Miol your one would only cover half of my chest but thak you for taking the time t do it. I'm going to have a bash at the perfect sweater but have to be honest that the pattern makes me near want to hyperventilate!! I shall breathe through it and no doubt there will be questions galore! Like sunny girl I'll do it longer though...do like to cover my tummy!
Hope that the nursing home goes well sg. Pfungi have you managed to see your mum or has weather been too awful?
It freezing here! Should go to allotment as lots of clearing to do...but its so snuggly here! Isoke loves going outside but dont know why she comes back with freezing puddies but has declined my offer to make her some boots....

Just a quickie as I have to get on (BUT had to look here first hmmmm)
ISOM - oh you did make me chuckle about hyperventilating at the pattern anything bigger than baby size makes me hyperventilate ha ha and as for Isoke not wanting boots - I had this picture of cat turning and saying "no mum they are just not cool enough dont you understand" - in the tone of a teenager :rotfl::rotfl:rofl :) bit like getting child to do their coat up if you know what I mean .......
Anyway I want to get cracking and start some more hats now I have the bug (thanks shelly!) for the hats - cast on another 8" square last night better do that first other wise WIP is gonna be huge pile .......
Take care all have a good day - will pop back later Jaqui xxxx

Hello everyone, brrrr! Its a chilly one, over the last few weeks, I have discovered (what our ancestors knew well) the bliss of a nice warm shawl.
Just now I am wrapped in a cream mohair shawl I crocheted for Mum some 25 – 30 years ago, it is a large triangle and not really practical when doing the housework, however the lovely multi coloured small shawl http://aemmeleia.wordpress.com/2008/02/22/eye-of-partridge-shawl/ I knitted in the late summer is ideal when pottering about the house, the crocheted Wheelchair Wrap http://crochetme.com/patterns/wheelchair-wrap is a good size too and sits nicely on your shoulders but needs a pin of some sort if you're working.

A very MSE idea, I can keep the central heating at its usual level yet still be snug in this very cold spell.

You could make a simple shawl by using the “diagonal square” method but without the decreased half. If you have some chunky or quick knit wool in your stash, I’m sure you could knock one up in next to no time! Be aware that if you use stocking stitch all through it will curl at the edges so you may want to use a garter stitch border. Make it long enough so the point reaches past the small of your back, the longer the better for maximum snuggliness!

ISOM - I saw Mum yesterday, just in time as she had mangled the last of her wool supply. She’s fine, grumbling about the weather as usual but I left her happily slipping stitches from one needle to the other –:rotfl:

Its snowing here – again, big wet flakes so hopefully it wont last!

Off to make a bit of lunch now,

    Take care & keep warm

    luv

    Hi
Just had a look at the link www.touchinglittlelives.org/knitbunting.html that f1widow posted and I'm stuck already :o
The pattern just says baby yarn? Could anyone tell me if this is DK or a finer yarn?

Thanks in advance - I'm sure this is only the first of many questions!
If swimming is good for your figure, can someone please explain whales?
