Hi all, just a quick shout to apologise to zippychick for the info I gave - my knitting needles are verrrrry old so have flattish bits at the end and the numbers are on the sides
forgot that modern needles have the numbers on top. If you are going shopping for wool you might pick up a needle guage, they aren`t expensive, or take the needles with you and ask the shop assistant the size.
Well, just been into town with DD - nightmare - roads bad because of overnight snow and no gritters out, and still snowing. Traffic at a standstill on any sloping roads as lorries can`t get up the hills, and I have to try and navigate one of the worst in the area to get to the hospital !!! I won`t be rushing though, if I get there sometime this afternoon I`ll stay and have a sandwich in the cafe between visiting times and come home later on. Hopefully the gritters will have done their stuff by then:rolleyes:. Well, I can live in hope eh? Oh to be able to stay indoors till all the snow disappears and just knit, eat, sleep, knit, eat, sleep...............in front of the fire with some good programmes on the telly. Blisssssssss.
Right, off to have a sarnie/coffee then clear the path to the car again.
Fingers crossed there are no problems driving. Will report back later, all being well.

Hi all, I agree about those flat plastic needle guages, I got one some years ago free with a magazine and it has been worth its weight in gold. Also the advice on using Double Knit (cheap and easy to see stitches) also chosing a lighter colour rather a dark shade makes it easier. Smaller projects like mitts, socks and slippers, although a bit more tricky are not so boring as jumpers or even scarves. A row counter is a good idea, or do what I do and count your rows on paper, then it is easy to look back to see where you have got to.
Had a glitch with my central heating boiler at the weekend. It seems that the condensated water had frozen up causing the boiler to switch off. It has never happened before so shows how cold it has been here. The engineer told me on Sunday afternoon that he had been to three others that day with the same problem. I wonder if my boiler was made by the same people who do the trains for the channel tunnel!
Had better go and see about some lunch now.
Hugs and sympathetic thoughts to all who are in need of them.
Take care. K0 -
Hi! Ok i have size 4 needles, and wool. I would like to make squares for myself for a blanket. I would like to get practised before doing things for charity
Is it silly to knit and crochet a blanket? I can knit and pearl and my friend is hopefully going to show me how to crochet later tonight, but i'm impatient and I want to start now!
Any ideas?A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Hi Zippychick - it's perfectly OK to knit and crochet squares for a blanket. For the best results, use the same ply wool for both - that is, if you use double knitting wool for the knitted squares, use the same for the crocheted ones. That way the squares will be easy to sew together. We'd love to see photos! Good luck with the crochet lessons!
Elaine - I hope your trip to the hospital goes well. (((Hugs))) to your DS.

How do i set a size? Thanks Kathy! Do i just do all knit or a row of each? I have no clue where to start or what pattern it makes in the wool:o
An other question - why are my ends messy? At the end of the row, the stitch always seems too big?A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Zippy, I second what Pam has said - double knit (DK) wool and 4mm needles. And try not to be tempted by "novelty" yarn for a while as it always looks interesting but can be a pain to knit with so I would keep away from it to begin with. Also the DK will work well with a 4mm crochet hook. Any questions or hitches, just ask because there's usually someone about. Good luck!
If you can knit and purl but have trouble with them together, why not try a simple knit2, purl2 rib for practice as it will be easy to see if you have gone wrongA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Hi zippychick, we're having a new year project for squares to make up into blankets, these will be 8" squares - but I suggest you do few smaller ones first, 4" squares are also useful so try them first,
cast on 20 stitches and knit every row for 40 rows, cast off. Measure the square - if its not 4" then you will need to "tweak" the numbers - if you post on here with the measurements then someone will advise what to do next.
Have fun
luv

PS - posts crossed - slip the first stitch for a neater edge

Just wanted to dash on and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
I've not been online much in the last few days and will be around even less for the next couple of weeks - I'm having withdrawal already - so I will catch up with all the news and join in with whichever project is decided upon in the new year.
Currently trying to resist going back to bed to keep warm because I have so much to do!0 -
Zippy - as a rule of thumb, with double knitting wool and size 4 needles, 5 stitches represents one inch wide. It won't look that wide when first cast on but, as you start knitting, it will. With crochet, you just work the beginning chain as long as you want it.
The knit2, purl2 rib means knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches, all the way across the row.

Chalky - love the idea of a Wooligan group project for 2010 must get my thinking cap on
Zippy – squares or scarves are the best to start with, and will give you plenty of practice, you will soon master it and will be into crochet before you know where you are

Jean – well done with the games I am so impressed:T
Elaine – special(((hugs))) for you and your family today xx I hope DS recovers quickly and is soon back home

We are off to a friends tonight where I might just consume a glass or 2 of vino collapsio the Rose` variety :beer:
I will take my crochet, I still have to finish a Ruffle scarf for my DIL, the way I am going I will be doing them in my sleep, every time someone comes they end up going home with one
We are going out for a meal tomorrow with my friend Jan and her OH, he has been quite poorly, getting better now though, but they are quite upset as they had to cancel their trip to Australia and New Zealand to see DD (in OZ) and DS (in NZ) and their families, so we decided to take them out to try and cheer them up a bit.
Have good evenings all and try and keep warm
Anne
