Come come Custardy, I am usually the first to take sides with you when posters berate the posties and I am, generally on their side as we get a good service from our postman/person. You might talk about a national strike but what about the constant local action that goes on? London posties and sorting staff have been striking on and off for months and other areas (stockport, stoke etc) have also been having the odd day here and there. You can hardly blame the public for thinking that posties strike at the drop of a hat because generally speaking they do seem to, but not nationally like now. The public are getting rather brassed off by the whole thing, especially as no-one really seems to know what's going on and no-one seems to be telling the truth either.

right but locally to me (east of scotland) the only strikes i have partaken in are national
so all the people round here would think differently,no?
you want to know whats going on? well today i finished bang on my time(since management are not paying any OT) and brought back 1 whole street of mail (thats 18 tenements with 16 flats per stair)
i used to work over my time to complete this new computer generated duty but not any more.with so many things in RM the figures dont add up
    so theres the future
  • Maybe then if all posties did work to rule then the management would eventually get the message. And if the public complained about their problems with the mail, through the correct channels (ie in writing) then things might improve? At the moment all we are hearing is that Royal Mail have hit their targets and made money for the first time in years and the Union are busy taking Royal Mail to court over temporary employment issues and spouting off 70's rhetoric. What we, the public want to hear is something constructive from both sides to see an end to the dispute and an acceptable level of service from rather nice happy posties!

i agree,a work to rule mentality is needed

the problem is working to rule is a pain.every day bringing back mail means i am literally swimming in mail. my every move will be monitored & questioned
managers will be on my case.look to my left and right and you see guys with clear frames and no mail left.so obviously my frame(workstation) stands out like a sore thumb
many dont do it for a quiet life

remember according to RM my duty is perfectly achievable with the allotted time plus u should have extra time for absorption of other duties. even then timings of duties are tricky.i do the job properly
eg i dont doorstep packets,i dont sign for customers items,i carry my red bag up to the top of stairs rather than dumping it on the first floor,i push the mail all the way in etc etc by not doing this i could be much quicker on my duty.which is better?
so either they are wrong or overnight i have suddenly become very slow
many posties are so used to job & finish they cant/dont/wont understand that running around, missing breaks etc is a foolish way to act.

as for targets.right now many managers are suspended for cooking the books on quality of service targets nationally including opening customers mail.
the Edinburgh mail centre last year had an articulated lorry trailer full of mailsort that managers hid to make the target for it being out of the mail centre.

Ivory Tinker, I believe in a work to rule too. Try getting posties to agree to it these days though. Too many of them (myself included) like an early start to get an early finish (I can do this atm because i'm on light duties) Many of them work through their Tea break in the morning for the sake of getting out a wee bit early, especially those using their own cars. Others skip their tea break because of the sheer volume of sorting that has to be done. There are few postmen these days who have their tea break, only one guy in our office that I have seen take a tea break. The rest grab a coffee and have it at their bench, or a quick smoke outside. I sincerely believe a work to rule would highlight more of the problems caused by relying on a postie's goodwill than strike action does.

Anyhoo, have been rambling so much that i'm gonna be late for work :rotfl: Oh well my official start time isn't until 9:15.:rotfl:

I have to say whatever RM's faults, I have to give them my utmost respect and admiration for being the one Company, who throughout this weather bringing the UK to a complete standstill, the Postmen have all still managed to carry on delivering, BIG UP TO THEM!!!!

  • Really? Not in my neck of the woods. Poofters! Heh, only joking. Just popped out to the local co-op and nearly slipped up on the ice. Posties should et danger money if they work in this weather.

I second that. My post has been delivered too.
Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.

My postie has been, and I told him he was a hero, and I meant it!

Custardy - the talk of the post all being brought back, have you read 'Going Postal' by Terry Pratchett?
