  • Again, thanks for all your responses. I did reply to the e-mail stating that I thought it normal to shop around for anything these days and that I didn't appreciate his rude reply, which I would post onto this forum. He did reply (which I have inserted below) but I will let the matter lie now because it is freaking me out a bit. In future, I will have a family member find a plumber, electrician etc for me
"that's all your doing is playing installers against each other , if all installers see through people like u the world would be a better place for all tradesman, and yes we are good and customer service fantastic for people we want to work for.
put whaterver u want on msf anyone with half a brain will see through u. You might get an immigrant to work for his super if you beat everyone down in price.
You see iv'e seen through you.

    happy quoting..............."

Actually I understand what the guy is saying, and lets be honest here, that's actually what you are doing.

However, his manner is somewhat strange. I'd simply ignore an email rather then post a response as He's done.

Yes it is normal to get more then one quote, but for boiler installations it's usually supply and fit due to the tight margins on this work.

But more so to do with the legally required certificates that are necessary with gas installations. You're asking a firm to guarantee an installation of a product they haven't supplied.

No excuse for the guys literacy or manners though...but looking at this from the other point of view I understand where he's coming from. (Don't think I'm defending the chap...just explaining his viewpoint).

Incidentally, I have a chum that owns a plumbers merchants, He sells most of these boilers at a margin of between 2%-4% profit to the trade and makes his money on pipes and fittings an associated peripherals....there really is no margin on these units.
  • Thanks for explaining that Alan. I didn't know that. I knew I needed a new boiler so I looked into it a bit and I bought one (using heat loss calculators and estimating the BTUs and DHW I needed etc). I shopped around and I could see that the boiler was at a good price and had great reviews so I bought it. I still have absolutely no idea what it will cost to have someone install it for me (if anyone will?). I did not set out to single-handedly cripple the plumbing trade. I don't usually make decisions based purely on the lowest cost and I try to frequent smaller businesses (hence why I didn't just opt for British Gas). To be honest though, if I had only requested a quote from one plumbing firm, I would have asked another just to check that they were roughly the same and I was not getting ripped off. I really didn't mean to offend anyone.

    Phew, that's a relief :D

My take on customer supplied goods is that if it all turns problematical when it either doesn't work properly, or at all, or breaks down within the warranty period then confusion reigns.

Should the installer also be supplying the goods then there is no problem, but who pays for his additional time otherwise?

Actually that reply would have freaked me a bit as well. I think you had a lucky escape, but I'd leave it at that.

Just so you know you are not on your own - when my son got married some guests needed to stay over night, and it was my job to ring round and find B&Bs for them. The first place I phoned was answered by a man who growled something like 'You phoned yesterday, if my price wasn;t good enough then, it's not good enough now'. I was so shocked by his attitude that I just hung up!

AA1 Plumbing, I must admit I wouldnt use them after the ops description of events. If AA1 plumbing want to treat customers this way then that it up to them but not a way for AA1 plumbing to get customers in the future. Just think of all the customers looking for AA1 plumbing will read this and see what POOR Customer service AA1 plumbing offers.
I certainly wouldnt want AA1 plumbing working in my house if this is the poor attitute that AA1 plumbing display when asking for a quote, it seems that AA1 plumbing are rude, AA1 plumbing do not want customers, AA1 do not want customers to get more than one quote.
In my opnion all good reasons I would avoid AA1 plumbing, I would furthermore tell everyone I know about this contact with AA1 plumbing and urge them not to use AA1 plumbing in the future
I would wonder why AA1 plumbing have a problem with you asking for more than one quote, isnt it standard to get more than one quote for anyjob, at least thats what trading standards advise isnt it?

I think you have probably had a very lucky escape from AA1 plumbers
