Firstly, OP, I note your username is 'worriedsik', which makes me wonder whether you have an anxious nature in general. You do sound like you have not experienced the joys of living in halls, otherwise you would not be so scandalised by this incident. But more pertinently, if your daughter was asleep, she cannot say for certain that the security guard did not enter quickly after knocking a second time. Think about moving your daughter to private accommodation if you want that level of privacy, but I know that I felt very safe in halls, and can't say I would have felt the same in private accomodation in my first year.

I posted on the thread yesterday that i have spoken with my daughter and it is being sorted and i thanked everybody for the helpfull ideas and thought that would end the thread but i see some ppl are still posting and assuming my user name has something to do with my personality ! lol if you read the post why i first joined the website you will see the reason why i chose the username and it has nothing to do with my personality so you can wonder and guess and try to find a reason but the reason was plain and simple so no need to disect the user name
so esmerelda am i to gues off your username that you were with quasamoda ?

ps ..it was my daughter who was anxious

really people like i have said in a few posts thank you all for your help but the problem is now being sorted

    Thanks

Just to let you know - I passed out in my room (NOT through drink lol). Luckily a friend was due to call for me and they got the security guard to let them in so wedging a door shut is not the best idea.
I think you are overreacting - students could be in bed at anytime of day and when asked to collect something many wont bother.

Not if the door is dead bolted from the inside!!! They'd know you were in there then.

As I say I had a Yale type lock, it could be locked and unlocked with a key from the outside, so if I went out and left the room unlocked anyone else with a key could gain access. However if I was inside and didn't want anyone to come in then there was a button I could press down which would lock the door so that it couldn't be opened from outside. I never really bothered with this facility as no one ever tried to get into my room but I can see that if there are often cleaners and security guards around you might want to be able to bolt the door from the inside when you want privacy.

Deadbolts on the inside are common on hotel rooms so that you can stop the maid coming in while you are in the shower or whatever, I really don't understand why this type of system couldn't be used in halls.

    I agree :T

  • I'm a student and I'm back in halls this year after a year of renting privately. I really don't advise you to complain about this - it's a very little thing and not worth it for all the hassle it will cause. It really won't go well if she alienates the support staff - they can make your life so much easier when you're in a pickle!

My scout will knock once and then come in to tidy and empty the bin etc and it was at 8.30am this morning! It is the way things are done in halls - there are so many rooms and things to do. People are more likely to be out at lectures in the morning and then studying in afternoons so he was probably trying not to disturb the students.

It was 10am in the morning and I would expect a student to be vaguely presentable by then. If she was undressed or in an otherwise compromising situation, she should just should jsut shout "hang on a sec" and then answer the door when decent.

I'm guessing they weighed up the estimated number of complaints they would have from people waiting for their new cables against the number of complaints of this nature. I personally remember all kinds of people knocking on my door when I first stared uni (brand new halls with a few details to be completed) but if you shouted to hang on they would.
I really think it's probably just a culture shock and difference in expectations - when you're used to living somewhere where people know whether you're in your room or not, you don't get used to calling out as soon as the door goes because you know people will wait until you open the door. At uni you have to get used to making yourself heard and one experience like this is normally a good lesson in how to avoid a similar situation happening again.
I would be surprised if they actually changed the way these things work - when things need to be done, they need to be done and if they waited for everyone in halls to be ready, it would never happen! However, as I have said, it's probably worth trying to encourage your daughter to get used to being a little quicker off the mark while she's living there as I'm sure this won't be the only time someone needs to get into her room when she's not expecting it. It's not ideal, but it's the only way to get things done, so as long as the uni recognise the need to give a moment for people to answer and your daughter makes an effort to squeak up if she needs another minute, it should be possible to keep everything sweet.
