Perhaps the moral of the story is to pay by debit card whenever possible?
The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water

Perhaps the real moral is for Tesco to improve customer service, Mistakes happen, its how they are delt with that shows how good a service is.
Tescos could have and should have been able to swap the till over and count the till there and then. However now that you have been disadvantaged by Tescos (you have been deprived of your £10 until such a time that Tescos find it suitable for them to return( I would now be looking for some compensation...not for the mistake but for the way that the mistake was delt with

i havent used cash in a supermarket for years, but if i was in tesco, id definately say 'thats a 20' when i hand it to them.
if they said 'oh, you dont trust me?' id have to say i dont trust tesco as far as i could throw them!

  • Right, well after five yes five phone calls and eventually just getting in my car and going down there (it isn't my local tesco), I finally got my £10 back - without even an apology !!

To be honest I am stunned at how this has been handled. The first phone call she put me on hold and then I got cut off. The second call I was told they would need receipt. I rang OH at work and he reminded me we had left the receipt with our contact details yesterday. Third time, they were transferring me to the cash office and ....i got cut off ! Fourth time I rang back and was promised somebody would call me within 15 minutes. An hour later I rang back and was told the Manager I saw yesterday would ring me but was in a meeting at the moment!

I went down and was told the Manager wasn't in today! After I told the girl she was suppose to be in a meeting, the girl on customer services made a phone call, then another. She then tannoyed for her. She then got a phone call. I don't know what was said as I am deaf and she covered her mouth so I couldn't lipread!! She just went into the till and handed me £10, just said 'there you go'. Surely she could have at least apologised - or was that asking too much?!!

Anyway the top and bottom of it is we have the money back and I think OH is writing to Head Office. This isn't the first time I have had problems with this particular store.

Thanks again for all the replies yesterday.

I work in a department store and in a case such as this, the till is spot-checked / counted there and then with the customer and a manager present, to solve the problem instantly.
Might not work in supermarkets in busy periods tho....

This happened to me in Morrisons, i gave her a 20 and she gave me change for 10 aswell. Thing is they didnt ask my name or number they said come back after 3 when we have cashed up, so i did they hadnt cashed up, so i went back at 4 and she said 'oh yer it was wrong' handed me the correct money and that was it!! And they call it customer service..

  • This is where debit/credit card would come in use. Crisis averted.

Perhaps what we need is barcodes on paper money. The cashier could simply scan the money as it is placed in the till and it registers the correct amount and works out the change. A little like how vouchers are inputted into tills.
A little too simple perhaps. I guess people would just alter the barcodes and make their fiver into a 50.

Or what we need to do is boycott the shop in question or at least name it and shame it on as many forums as possible, the more the shop and branch get mentioned on forums the higher place it will get in google, may not work so well for tesco as it did for the pub that gave bad service a little while ago but worth a shot?
OP which branch of Tesco was it?
  • It was the Baguley branch of Tesco
