Tesco short changed us....

Options
We have just been to Tesco. OH gave the girl £20 and she gave him change for £10. He queried it straightaway (she clearly wasn't that interested). She then called over the manager. All we could do was leave our name and address and we have to ring them tomorrow afternoon. Really annoyed. Currently £10 out of pocket.

Does anybody know if Tescos policy where if they overcharge you they give it you back + more will apply in this case? I just want to get my facts straight before I speak to them tomorrow. Of course there is nothing to stop the girl pocketing the £10 in which case the till will be correct.

TIA for any advice on how to do with this.

Did you query it before you left the till?

Im sure in that case that they should give it back to you when the till is balanced at the end of her shift but as you say, it depends on the honesty of the woman I guess.

Normal policy in just about any shop.

They haven't 'overcharged' you. There has been a possible mistake. Until they check the tills, nobody can prove who made the mistake. It could have been you, couldn't it.

Unfortunately, the 'I gave you a twenty' scam started shortly after the invention of money, hence shops will rarely give customers the benefit of the doubt.

In any case, don't Tesco video the tills? I though they did. That would prove conclusively at the end of the day.

Yes, the world is full of humans who make mistakes. End of story.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?
  • Yes we did query it at the till.
I wasn't aware that they filmed at the tills but I shall ask them tomorrow as it will certainly help.
    Thanks for your replies
  • I wouldnt have left the store without my tenner!

What if that was all the cash you had and you needed to get a bus/train or cab home?

If a mistake was made then it should be checked and put right straight away, not at the end of the shift.

Surely a modern computerized till should know at any time how much cash it contains?

  • Exactly what I said Shandypants ! We had two young children with us. The Manager was not for budging, there was no way they were coughing up £10 today. OH did mention that we could't afford to be £10 out of pocket but she wasn't interested.

I appreciate mistakes happen (I have been known to make them myself!!), but when I am doing a job that I am paid to do, I at least pay attention. This girl clearly didn't want to be there and was completely uninterested. She automatically keyed in that we had given her a £10.

Flipping annoying, but will hopefully get back tomorrow...
  • I was short changed once at Tescos they claimed that I had only given a £10 when I gave them a £20. I stood my ground and said at the till, but the person could not give me any more money till they had cashed up the tills when they had finished their shift. I went home and rang customer serivces at the local store and explained what had happened the person had finished their shift by then and they had cashed up. They did find that there till was up by £10 so I went to the store and collected. They were very helpful and polite even though it could not have been sorted out at the time.

I'm sure they can do this at any time but if it's busy how many customers will complain that not all the tills are running?

So you would just walk away?

If the same thing happened at a market stall, with no till, would you just give up then too?

If someone has taken £10 of yours you should be entitled to get it back when you ASK for it not at their convenience.

I cant believe they have been gettingaway with it, I am afraid if they tried that with me then they would have to call the police to get me to move from the spot. I would just hold up the till que or not untill the situation was resolved.
