But hh, think of all the books the "disadvantaged children" will now have access to thanks to being promoted on sites like this. I'm sure Ikea has done pretty well out of it as well, very, very busy.

Don't be lost for words regarding Argos calalogues, I don't think it would have happened, certainly hope not - it was intended as a bit of light relief (this may need explaining, what light relief is and I don't have the time).

No Argos catalogues from me and I know at least two of my books I handed in that I hadn't even finished colouring them in - so there.

I took some books to my nearest Ikea yesterday, my girlfriend was with me so we handed over 5 each to be told "only one £5 gift card per household"

Has anyone else had that happen? I can't find anything in the terms and conditions about that. I said we don't live together and offered to give the addresses but she gave us two gift cards although acted a bit put out.

We went today(more than once) and was told to come back tomorrow for some more, so different staff have different interpretations, or some are just plain awkward...

I think the people that are at "a loss for words" regarding the argos catalogue comment need to find a sense of humour ;) it was clearly a joke.

My OH and I have been into the Ashton one twice and handed over 5 books each, we asked if we could take more into tomorrow and she said yes no problem. I want to walk back down tonight, only live 5 minutes away but OH is being lazy and won't!

I don't see that people are exploiting this, the charity is going to make a lot of money out of all these books, so what's the problem?

One of our local primary schools contacted Ikea regarding them bringing lots and the school benifiting. However they stated that they would not accept lots from the school but suggested if parents went up with the five books and got the voucher and donated it to the school, they are going to allow the school to use them in one transaction!

Thanks very much for this ;)
Had a book clearout yesterday and gained two vouchers (one for me , one for OH). Managed to buy a few items for the kids and this certainly helped!!

Who's been most charitable and earned the most gift cards/vouchers, then?

I've got 3 (spent 2 already). I plan to donate books 16-20 tomorrow in Southampton.

  • I have been going all week with my mum, and between us we have donated 130 good books and got £130 between us, we are going tomorrow but will only have 10 books each to go with unless we can get hold of anymore. I used over £60 worth of cards today in 1 transaction. I will update the final total on sunday.

Thank OP. We ( OH + 10 years old son) went to Wembley branch and hand in 17 books; got 3 £5 gift card and spent them all in 1 go with no problem. Lovely SA but sad to see some of the really old tatty worthless books in the book cage that some other people donate.

We (fam and friends dragged there too, lol) have been going a lot also, going again today so will also update.

Prob be around £150 ish. Luckily combined we have a ton of books that were going to a charity for xmas soon anyway, so perfect timing.. And all were good books too. With no catalogues in site :rotfl:

Good for the charity - and equally good for me.

    Win-Win. :D

  • Hi

    This is my first posting on here. I just had to tell of my experience in IKEA Belfast after reading what rhubarbcottage had to say about no address details being asked for;

My girlfriend and I decided to pay a visit to IKEA (Belfast) for our tea, as I am rather partial to their Swedish meatballs. My girlfriend had just received an email telling her about the “Billy Books” voucher offer. As the email said it was limited to one per customer, we took along five books each.

On presentation of the books my girlfriend was given a voucher by the lady behind the kiosk, who then looked at me and said that the offer was limited to one per household. My girlfriend then explained what was said in the email, but the lady told her that she was wrong and that it was definitely limited to one per household.

As I was hungry and more interested in getting my meatballs than a voucher, I pointed out that this was irrelevant as we aren’t from the same household. To this the lady replied that this doesn’t matter as it is limited to one per transaction. I explained that we were making two transactions, but the lady insisted that it was one transaction, even when I lifted five books and set them down again in a distinct pile.

This attitude made me determined to get a voucher – if only on point of principle. My girlfriend asked what would happen if she came in with a female friend. The reply was “That’s different”

We were then told that it was one transaction because we had come in the door together! The lady finally relented when I said that, if necessary, I would walk out the door and come back in again with my five books.

I would like to point out that at no time was I, or my girlfriend, in any way rude or abusive and that the whole conversation was witnessed by a young male employee who was also standing behind the kiosk. I am confident that he can substantiate this account of events.

As the whole conversation took place in the entrance foyer on a busy Friday evening it was witnessed by many passers by. It made me feel embarrassed and humiliated to think that so many people saw me practically begging to get a £5 voucher! Again I’d like to point out that it was this lady’s attitude that made me so determined to get the voucher.

I can fully understand that a misunderstanding can occur and that a member of staff is told the policy is one thing when an email to customers says something quite different. However this in no way explains the treatment we received on Friday evening. This lady seemed determined, for whatever reason, from the outset that I was not going to get a voucher no matter what policy she had to adopt; one per household, one per transaction, one per couple of a different sex, one per group entering the store at the same time……

If I had known in advance that a £5 voucher would be so difficult to get and cause such embarrassment, I would have left the books at home and went out and enjoyed my meatballs. As it was, I couldn't enjoy them as the whole episode left a sour taste in my mouth.

I've tried complaining about our treatment to IKEA. When I phoned I got put through to what I believe was a call centre somewhere in England. I asked for an email address but was told there was none, so I've sent a complaint by snail mail.................. awaiting a response.......................
