I have just been on the 'phone to talktalk, they have confirmed that as from June 2nd, all 0870 and 0845 numbers will be free.

Yes, and as with BT they are putting up line rental and call charges to everyone whether they use those numbers or not, so everybody pays in the end, nothing is "free" they are inclusive!

  • These 0870 & 0845 numbers are NOT free with all BT packages !!
Only on weekends and after 6pm.
How many companies are open those hours ?
You would mostly be trying to call a utility call centre that closes around 5.30 !
So just be aware that BT saying these calls are Free, is not strictly true.

They are only free after 6pm and at weekends when the majority are CLOSED !

Sorry to rain on your parade, and I hate being seen as if I am supporting BT, (which I don't), but you can get them INCLUSIVE, (not free), on all packages if you pay £4.95 per month for the" Unlimited Anytime Plan"; -

^ Free calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers. Availability of free 0845 and 0870 calls of up to 60 minutes duration (excluding indirect access numbers and dial-up internet access) dependent on residential BT Calling Plan: weekends only (with the Unlimited Weekend Plan), evening & weekends (with the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan), or any time (with the Unlimited Anytime Plan). Fair use policy applies – max. 1,000 mins or 150 calls a month. If either of these limits on free calls is exceeded, BT will charge for these calls until further notice See Terms & Conditions for full details.

They do like the word "free" don't they, the fact that you are paying for them seems to elude them, wonder why?

Don't forget the "fair usage policy".

  • The phone deals with Southern Electric now include the 0870/1 and 0845/4 numbers in their packages, so you can now call them at no extra cost

But have they, like BT, increased their line rental and call charges to 01/02/03 numbers so that everyone pays whether they use them or not?

At the moment we are on the Anytime plan with BT however our "normal calls" amount to less than 10 minutes quarter as we mainly use our mobile phones for phoning and Sky pe for overseaas calls. The majority of our calls are to "0870" or "0845" numbers and in some cases it is annoying as the company is either in the same or the next town. We do use the 0870 website.
Our contract with BT finishes next month and we would like to change to a line rental only plan as we are not concerned abourt so called "free" weekend calls as you have no option but to pay for them any way with BT. The only reason we maintain the line is for broadband as we are in a bad position for broadband via a dongle.
At the moment there does not seem to be a cheaper alternative to BT and we will need to remember to obtian the alternative number for any 0870 and 0845 numbers.
BTW I noticed that Sky have blocked a lot of the alternative numbers and you have to use the 0870 numbers.

But as you are on the "anytime plan", your 0845/0870 numbers are included, (as per my post #506 above), so why use the "sayno" site?

I am referring to when our contract expires next month. Sorry for the confusion.
  • I used to use 1280 prefix to route 2 calls per month through BT in order to get 'free' caller id and call minder. However, last month these calls were billed by OneTel (Talk Talk), my CPS provider, and not BT. When I called BT I was told that I had been part of a mass migration from CPS to Wholesale and that the 1280 prefix would no longer be effective.

I have not been informed of this change by OneTel/TT even when I checked with them. They deny that anything has changed.
