My telephone line is provided by BT but my caller provider is AOL. They have just confirmed that they have taken over wholesale calls and therefore I cannot access my bt account with the override no 1280 and therefore use there free 0870 weekend nos or indeed cannot route any calls through bt which will affect my 2 monthly calls to retain the 1571 etc. I wasn't informed about this from AOL.0

Update 17/8/09. BT company representative has now done an about-turn on this and confirmed that chargecard calls do NOT count as chargeable calls. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...3&postcount=11Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Sorry didn't really know where else to put this - but I think it's important.
I've just been reading that a lot of government departments - including the Jobcentres, are using expensive 0870 or 0845 numbers - and this is often for the those people most in financial need! Plus some of the waiting times once you get through are very long indeed.
We can petition Number 10 on their website - but only have until 2nd April 2009 to do it - speak up and protest - these expensive numbers are a rip off and if you are on a mobile tarrif do not come under your free minutes use. I often use the Say No To 0870 website but apparently this is not so good for government numbers or if you can find one, they refuse to deal with your problem and just tell you to dial the expensive number!
Add your name to the petition HERE.0 -
I was just reviewing the reply to the petition on the Prime Minister's website.
This nonsense was supposed to have been sorted out by January 2008. Is there no end to this rip-off in sight?0 -
There's already a thread on this here
I'll move this thread to the Home Phones board.

Oh, sorry - did do a search but I included "Petition" in the search terms - so nothing came up. I was keen to draw attention to the Number 10 petition and the fact that it finished in April - and when I signed up there were only 350 names on it! I think if more people knew about it they would surely sign up? Let's hope so anyway!0
