Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Not only free numbers but National alternatives which can be called cheaply using the likes of '18185'

  • I have 0870 numbers and this site is excellent. Another great find on Money saving expert.
  • Would people find it useful to have an SMS service which you sent the 087x number to and got the geographical one sent back? I know this could be built pretty easily and would cost ~15-25p per message (which would be saved on a single call if rung from a mobile).

Alternatively a simple .mobi site which you access on your mobile's browser where you enter the number and get the result back.

We do this kind of thing for major networks already (but I won't say WHO in case they are reading!).

You can use your mobile browser to visit

directly. It is usuable but not mobile friendly.

OR you could use the 18185 redirect method

Someone suggested and did a wap look-up version quite a while ago, was more or less ignored for a while when asking permission, but subsequently wasn't allowed to continue using the database

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it so this seemed the best place.

I'm on an O2 contact and want to find a way of calling 08 numbers (inc. 0800, which are also no longer free) on the cheap from my mobile, as I don't have a landline and I don't really want to have to start paying through the nose for a previously free service.

My idea was to sign up to Liquid Telecom through Topcashback for £15 cashback and credit the account with £10 (don't you love cashback sites). In the day LT charge 2p for 0845 and 3p for 0870, and I'd access the service using the 0207 number with my free minutes.

Does this seem like a good solution, or is there a much more simple way? I do use saynoto0870.com, but it doesn't always have a number and I'd like to have something in place if they don't.

    Thanks!

You can certainly make the 0500, 0800 and 0808 calls out of your O2 inclusive minutes - see HERE.
