Hi everyone! so glad I found this site , I am about to send a letter to 'Sit Up Auction Channel ' about the overcharge on my bill I phoned to purchase one item on 8 Feb, and there are 5 charges of £2.00 TWO of those for the same moment 16.44 and then another one at 16.45 , then 18.18 and 19.02

Has anyone got any information about this premium rate number 0904 charged at standard £2.00 even for 12 seconds?

You will have to give more information than that.

The amount that appears on your bill is presumably your telephone bill, thus it is nothing to do with "Sit Up Auction Channel" or whoever operates the number.

The amount you pay is dependent on your telephone provider. Which provider are you with? It is also dependent on the first few digits of the number. What is the 090 number in full?

Try putting the number in the ICSTIS number checker. It will tell you who the number is run by. It appears you already know that it is Sit Up TV.

Also, there is a (PDF) document that tells you what BT charge for specialised numbers. The price for the 0904 range varies wildly and is categorised by the following two digits in the number. It can be priced by a fixed fee, a cost per minute, or both.

Calls to 0904 251 0100 cost a fixed fee of £1.50 from a BT residential landline.

£1.50 fixed fee are the highest-priced UK premium rate numbers (although there are also £1.50 per minute numbers).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Hi everyone, I agree the amount you pay depends upon the provider, and as you said it is my telephone, but the way this is done as you are probably aware, when you order something from one of these tv channels, you simply dial up the number and press 1 and the company calls you back. Although you say its nothing to do with sit up channel , in this instance who do you think is responsible for charging 3 times, when I couldn't possibly have ran
g 3 separate times at 16.44 and 16.45 hrs I only rang once. After all it is the Sit up channel who now has the money?

The number is 09042510100 and I am with Virgin
So is there no action in the future about this scam as there is with the 0870

It is Virgin Media who has overcharged you, if you did not make all the calls.

How could you not "possibly" have made 3 calls? Of course you could!

    Doesn't matter.

From what I can gather, you have been charged for 5 calls and you only made 3 of those. In this instance I would advise telephoning Virgin customer services and disputing the calls you did not make.

Additionally, I'd query with Virgin as to why they appeared as £2 on your bill (assuming you phoned from a cable landline, and not a Virgin mobile). The Virgin Media pricing structure states that calls to the 090425 range cost £1.50 per call.

The ICSTIS webpage seems to suggest that you contact Sit-Up directly (who are, incidentally, also owned by Virgin).

I think most people's problem with 0870, is that it masquerades as a normal cost call; whereas, in reality, it's much more expensive. Premium rate calls are specifically designed to be a revenue driver, to enable the service provider to provide a premium service.

I will contact Virgin as well as Sit up Plc, but I might not get any joy

The Premium charge more than covers the cost of the call back from Sit up Channel, it probably costs a fraction of this to call back, so are huge profits being made here??

i don't think they're making 'huge' profits due to the nature of the business. I think they're offsetting the cost of the phone calls against the reduced price of what they're selling.
a bit like paying cheap on Ebay but over paying on the postage.
