You might also be re-assured to know that the Government advised two years ago all its departments and agencies against their own use of 0870 numbers.

Notice they only "advised" and did any take notice? certainky not DVLA for instance!

By no means all Departments did use 0870 numbers, but where they did, they should now have been replaced with either geographical, 0845 (local rate) or 0800 numbers.

What planet do these muppets live on? there is no "local & national" rate charges and hasn't been for nearly 3 years.

Hello, Was the government's and Ofcom's wishy-washy reply to the "say no to 0870" campaign a surprise? A campaign that developed a good degree of support. This government has given up listening to the people of this country long ago.
As I write I have found that Alliance & Leicester are removing geographical numbers from their call centres which facilitate access from abroad. Has anyone found similar or could anyone confirm or deny this?

There is a difference. Locall numbers are 0845 etc, whereas as local are ummm.. local. For most domestic comsumers 0845 numbers are more expensive that local calls.

Absolute bunkum, there is no such thing as "local" or "national" and has not been since July 2004, since then ALL numbers beginning 01/02 cost the same regardless of distance, 0845 are dearer except in BTs case during the day Mon-Fri when they cost the same, but are excluded from all phone bundles and cost up to 40p pm from a mobile.
Using BT as the yard stick because they are the cheapest for 0845 Mon - Fri daytime:
"local, lo-cal, lowcal etc all begin 0845,(and in some cases the term is applied ,incorrectly, to 0844, but these cost up to 5ppm at all times), and cost 3ppm, as do calls to 01/02 numbers, but at weekends and evenings the calls to 01/02 numbers cost 5.5p for up to 1 hour,

    Dear Mr
    DATA ENTRY/0845....
Thank you for your recent email regarding the above matter.
As you are aware 0845 numbers cannot be referred to as local rate. We have recently issued an Ad Alert to the industry advising of our requirements for such numbers.
We have therefore referred the problem to our Compliance team, which will resolve it quickly and effectively. As you know, the team does not write to complainants, but rest assured that we share your concerns about this issue and we shall address it thoroughly.
Thank you for taking the time to draw this to our attention. Yours sincerely

Here is an adjudication from ASA upheld against a company referring to them as "local rate"

You are correct that 0845 will be more expensive, but until the public realise that, they will continue top think that "local rate" means cheap.

It appears that the ASA are yet another toothless tiger - over a year later Windsor Telecom's website states:
    Local Rate Business Phone Numbers

These include business phone numbers with broad public awareness, including 0845 Business Phone Numbers and 0844 Business Phone Numbers. Callers only pay the BT Local Rate.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Heinz,
Is this the same Windsor Telecoms? as the address on the ASA ruling is:-
    Windsor Telecom plc
    50 West Street
    Farnham
    Surrey
    GU9 7DX

But the address on your link is:-
    Windsor Telecom plc
    First Floor, West House
    Braeside Business Park
    Sterte Avenue West
    Poole
    BH15 2BX

    Have they moved?

I can't imagine how 2 PLCs with exactly the same name could exists and, now, the Royal Mail postcode checker shows only the below two firms at the Surrey address:

Looks like they must have moved then, maybe worth sending an e-mail to ASA, I have already done this, maybe a few more could do the same?
