And man wasn't meant to meddle with things like synthetic drugs or atificially prolong our life expectancy... the longer we live the more animals we consume (directly or indirectly) and the more pollution we produce... if we don't ride horses they become a novelty meat like deer, but a lot easier to shoot
As it is I'd rather horses were generally treated as pets than a glorified cow... although the bovine life is SO nice

have a beautiful 17hh mare myself.
do i use a whip, yep. why= to back up legs aids, if needed. to get her to move away from me quickly, if needed. i could go on. also i have given her a flick if she forgets herself and pushes me.

i wouldn't use a whip if she was being naughty if she was scared /didn't know what was being asked of her. but then that wouldn't be naughty would it.

i also can ride her bareback and with no bridle etc, if big field.
she will move away if i move in a certain way toward her or point etc.
she plays fetch, catch, football, takes her rug off, or anything placed over her back. spanish walk, limps. etc..... of course i have to pay her to do this.. pony nuts or polos help.:rolleyes:

this horse came to me as a nutter. was told she would have been shot if i hadn't taken her on. told i'd get killed by her. she would kick and bite. and i couldn't groom her, catch her lead her, if she saw a whip she would run. she also hadn't been taught manners from the start. a very dangerous horse, thanks to woman who bred her. but didn't teach her the rules.

i didn't ever hit her for being naughty,
but she needed a firm hand and taught what was acceptable.
anyway , she is the most fantastic and fun nutcase ever, and has done me proud. although lame now with ligament damage. i will keep her forever.
OK i know i have gone on and on, and not given full story,

i would use a whip on a horse to, get it to move if needed. if she barges through me. acts like an idiot when she knows better etc. so i can get her attention back on me/the job she has to do.
but i wouldn't use it like a weapon./ if horse hasn't been trained right to know it's being naughty.

Ummmmm Exactly my point!!!!!!

So is it better to let the humans that rely upon beasts of burden for their survival to starve? Is that humane to those people?

I think if we treat animals with kindness and consideration then we can use their abilities to assist us (the strength of the horse or ox) in exchange for using our skills to assist them (providing them with food, shelter etc).

Others have mentioned it but I thought I would reply to you directly.

At best they would now be wild game like deer at worst they would now be extinct. Before horses were domesticated the herds were routinely just driven off cliffs for food.

I'm not against people having them as livestock/pets. I have always loved Horses but have never been in a position to have one. I was absolutely angry when I heard about those 100+ Horses that were ill treated by that scummy family who were let out of Jail free. I can see the difference in using a whip to control a Horse but as long as the Horse does not get hurt by it. I'm sorry If my comments offended those who ride them for love.

Sorry you mis-interrpted what i was saying - i wasn't agreeing with you, i was being playfully sarky about a previous post.

If we didnt use horses, they would undoubtfully either become extint, or be shot for food, Neither which i would like to see happen.
