Giving a pony a smack because it is being a little **** stopping at jumps and running out.

Saddle fine, pony training fine ... pony was just being a little, stubborn awkward **** that day.

Instructor is photographed on pony not wearing a hat (which no-one has even mentioned yet) and is holding a whip the same way a jockey would hold a whip to fan a racehorse.

Suddenly instructor is getting accused of "whipping the pony to get him over the jump" from people who have looked at the photo, not from people who know the pony or the instructor.
  • Learn to leave it on a good note, had a few stubborn ponies in my lifetime.. best way is to do anything possible to get him over the jump once hes over leave it at that. If you keep trying to get him over it over and over again he will become pig sick and then just behave badly anyway.
Theres 2 types of horse owner, a person who owns a horse and a horsey person ;)

IMHO animals are rarely naughty just for the sake of it. Find out *why* the animal is misbehaving and sort that out. No need to smack, it teaches the animal nothing positive at all
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • Give it an ASBO. The government say it sorts humans out.

Some ponies (especially the native breeds! :) ) quickly learn that if they can take an easy route they will, so can run out on a jump rather than go over it. Personally I would give my pony a small tap with schooling crop just on the bum the side he was going to run out to, but that was just what I was taught, thinking back now it doesn't really seem right. I don't like crops really at all, and after my first loan pony (little sod!! welsh sec D and very young/ green and strong!!) I never used a crop at all, although I'm not known for my show jumping! :D

I prob wouldn't think it was cruel if one tap but a hard hit ie raised arm, or repetitive hits would be unnecessary IMO. I would rather go the schooling route than the punishment route personally.
  • I ride with a whip but rearly use it. The time i have used it was when my horse started bucking, no reason, was just in a mood! I came off, damaged my back (didnt know that at the time!) got back on, he started again so i tapped him on his back end. He must of thought "!!!!!! IS THAT!" because he stopped straight away and off we went.

Animals do not understand why you are smacking them all they know is that you are hurting them. If the Pony gives you a kick in retaliation would that be ok?
