A Situation.......We are Stuck!!

Hi Folks,

I'm new here and would love some quick help!

Basically we live in Hull (me and the wife just married in April) and we would dearly love to move to Bridlington so we can start trying for a family and live more economically.

Now then, my wife is disabled and we are on income support. Unfortunately as she keeps getting turned down for DLA we are not in receipt of DLA.

I am finding it hard to find work now even though I'm a qualified IT Engineer.

What would be Ideal is for us to get a council house in Bridlington possibly on the grounds of my wifes disabilities and move there before Christmas. We can get good references from our landlord and we can get backup from her GP.

But, It's looking difficult to move to Bridlington through the Town Council straight away.

We cannot afford to go private due to paying for bonds etc.

As we privately rent in Hull we can't do an exchange.

Does anyone have any ideas on the best way forward ?

Thanks alot in advance!!!

  • hmmmm toughie tbh. I know here you need to be living in the district area before you can gethomed there, and even then it's very hard unless you have quite a few kids. I dont know whether you have family there who woul be needed to help care for your wife? also, it would be very unlikely that you'd get anything bigger than a one bed as theres just the two of you, which obviously in the long run wouldnt be big enough.

what about seeing whether the council will help towards your deposit to move there privately?

  • I never thought of that I didn't know it was possible to do such a thing,

Which council would I ask Brid or Hull ?

Also, would it not be possible to get moved due to my wifes disabilites. She has more than one and they are quite serious but doesn't get DLA ?

Council housing lists are thousands long. Disability alone isn't enough to get to the top of the list, especially if there's not DLA involved.

You should phone up Bridlington council and talk to them about their local marketplace and how long their lists are and the likelihood of getting anywhere within even 5 years.

You would need to be living in the area to go onto the list.

In 2008 in East Riding there were 9,975 families on the waiting list (excluding those waiting for transfers), which is 7.1% of all households. In the same period, in Hull, there were 12,416 on the list, 10.9% of all households.

Most places are cheaper because there's less opportunity, so you might lessen your job chances even further by moving.
  • Also I'd just like to mention,

At the house we are in now we haven't really got the "Ideal" hot water arrangement as we have an immersion heater tank. As you can imagine this costs loads to use but we do have centrak heating through a boiler.

It's a minor issue but it isn't nice paying that much on electric to use the hot water. It also takes 45 minutes to heat up and we only get 10 minutes of hot water form it. By the time the bath has half filled the water is cold.

We could go to warmfront they supply free combi boilers but that is of course for people who recieve DLA!

    Any thoughts anyone ?

  • I have applied for a job in Brid BUT it is only on an IF bases of getting it. We want to move regardless. I wouldn't mind living in Brid and commuting. Living in Hull however and commuting is different as there is nowhere near Hull and the Social aren't forced to pay my commuting costs. It is quite expensive to travel from Hull to anywhere than it would be from Bridlington.

I don't understand why, if your wife is seriously disabled, she doesn't get DLA? It seems very odd that she has been refused it... On what grounds/reasons was she refused it?

I love giving home made gifts, which one of my children would you like? :D :A :D
  • well she has got

Diabetes, Club foot, Spineabifida, And an under active thyroid!

She has applied for DLA a couple of times and been refused. It was quite a while ago now and I cant remember why she was refused.

But its the same old situation, those that done deserve it get it and those that need it dont

    This statement is outrageous.
No one who is on DLA doestnt deserve it, you have seen the criteria needed for DLA. Your wife cannot meet the criteria so doenst get it because she is obviously not in need of the care that DLA provides for.

I suggest she tries again and if she is turned down, then appeal.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

There are specific ways of filling in the forms...for the non clued up ones (I am not talking about the swinging the leg ones but the honest and not knowing ones), all it takes is the wrong word used, the right word omitted or a turn of phrase which they don't quite understand. The form has to be just so.....

The best bet is to get a professional to help you fill in the forms....I think the CAB may well offer this service. Alongside this, supporting evidence of disability in the form of correspondence from the doctor, consultant etc is (I would say) vitally important.

If an application is turned down, ask for a review and further to that if that fails...an appeal.

Sorry can't help on your main question!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
  • I wouldnt have thought that diabetes or underactive thyroid are usually DLA conditions. My father in law gets it, but thats with diabetes, epilepsy, extreme knee problems, multiple heart attacks, and not being able to walk very far. I think alot of it comes down to the amount of help you need to ake care of yourself, and the difficulties you have in getting around. Definately worth asking the CAB to help, and also perhaps ask the GP if theres anything they can suggest you include?
