Harley, while you can, sit with your boobs out. When you can, get some breast cup/shields to let the nipple breathe. Although I used vaseline in hospital (mine were red and slightly cracked, then one went crusty). Rub some breast milk on them and let it air dry (BM is antibacterial).

Get your latch checked and never pull her off, pop her seal with a finger.

Have you tried swapping positions to see where she gets a better latch from?

    It does get better honest.

ETA, I looked at kellymom and worked out how to 'shape' the breast (so its a wedge shape) which helped me. Amber has a small mouth (getting bigger though) and now she can get a good mouthful whereas before it was just the nipple.

Harley - is she getting enough of a mouthful of breast? She needs to be taking much more than the nipple into her mouth...you may be best having someone talk it through with you, there is a number in Krystals sig which goes through to a BF counsellor who is sometimes based near to you...will go find it.

Are there any Booby Groups near you? The abolute best thing to do is to let a trained BF counsellor have a look at your latch and help you out.

(((HUGS))) it does get better and easier. When she is latched right you shouldn't have any pain at all.

Thanks MFD. They are closed at the moment but open at 9.30tomorrow morning.

The breastfeeding support group is 10.30 till 12 so will be able to speak to someone one way or another.

Harley go back a few pages to find a post by Krystal and call the number in her sig.
if she is on wrong and you can tell (ie your gripping the sofa with ur free hand ;)) pop your lil finger in her mouth to break the sucion and get her off to have another go.
I found it was easir to get Ed on properly when he was calm, not sure if she cries when hungry but if she does, try to pre-empt and feed her before she gets to crying IYSWIM
I'm sure it'll work out for you, I almost gave up from the pain but said just one more day and hat day he just 'got it' and the pain was gone completely not long after :) xx

Thanks Sami, I do take her off and put her on again but she/I never quite seem to get it right. Though you might have a point about her crying. I think the good feed last night was before she got to the crying stage. Unfortunately I have a UTI so if I am going to be feeding I need to go to the loo and get a drink and stuff all of which means she is kept waiting a couple of minutes. And she appears to have inherited my lack of patience.

I think she is starting off with plenty of boob but often re-adjusts herself so there is less in her mouth. Also lips never seem to roll out as they are supposed to, though they used to and they do sometimes start off that way, it just doesn't last.

It did help to shape the nipple as that was something they showed me in hospital. They were great while I was in there, unfortunately at home alone things are not quite so easy.

Hopefully the support group tomorrow will have someone who can see what I'm doing and tell me where I'm going wrong.

Also, she has a white lump on the inside of her lip in the corner, only noticed it today. Any ideas? is it likely to be a blister from poor latch or something worse?

Could be thrush Harley, which would cause your pain and red nips too, get it checked out and try to keep ur nips dry as that will help if it is until you get treatment

  • Harley - really try to get to the group...even if you only make it for the end (it is all I managed when Benjamin was 3 weeks - aimed for 10.30, managed to arrive about 11.45!!) you can't beat someone having a look and helping.
You can always call the number tomorrow afternoon for more help.

Are you using a pillow or something to support her weight? Just a normal pillow is fine, no need for anything fancy! Also remember, don't shove the boob in her mouth, move her to you, nose level with nipple...wait until she opens her mouth and then just move her in slowly (chin first), don't grab the back of her head though!

Once she is on, try and support her in the same position.

And finally, if you have larger boobies or nipples that point south I know a few ladies who find rugby hold easier.

Not sure about the thrush...we never had it (touch wood) but the BF counsellors would be able to spot that too.

Am I the only terrible mother who would let her baby scream so she could stuff her face? :D
I never needed to. (But if it came to a choice between being able to eat and leaving the baby crying for five minutes, I would eat because it is worse for the child if you don't eat.

Susan - If you don't mind me asking, what are the other objections to the MMR? I don't want to start a debate/worry anyone - but i'm interested. (Actually - i'll pm you). ;)
Have replied to your pm before I saw this. It's to do with the fact that they obtained the rubella virus strain from an aborted baby and also they grow some virus vaccines in cell cultures which originally came from aborted babies. I posted a few links about it on my blog a while back.
    Sami_Bee wrote: »
3 - I think Susan's objection is linked to the rubella vaccine being made from cells from an aborted fetus http://www.mmrthefacts.nhs.uk/questions/question.php?id=83
Just to clarify: there aren't any cells from aborted babies in the vaccine - they are used to grow it. (I guess a bit like soil is used to grow plants but there isn't soil in plants.) That link is rather disingenuous though as it says, "The rubella vaccine was developed from a fetus obtained from a single termination of pregnancy" which it later refers to as "RA27/3". RA27/3 stands for Rubella Abortus 27 sample 3 (i.e. it was the 27th one they used and the third sample from it that they took). They also fail to mention that "cell culture called MRC5" originates from an aborted baby despite the fact that this is supposed to be the issue they are addressing.

    Hi again ladies.

I'm back with more questions. I do try to keep up honestly, I just don't seem to have much to contribute at the moment.

I have been bfing Kezia since she was born (3 weeks ago today) but it has steadily got more painful and since my scream frightened the life out of her earlier I figured it was about time I got some advice. I have searched the net and think I've got the positioning wrong, although last night we had a perfect feed and I never felt a thing. However, today we are back to excruciating pain again. She appears to chew the nipple, and the redness is mostly around the outside as if it is rubbing raw on her gums or lips.

Further searching of the web said that nursing pads can cause problems as they keep the nipple wet. Now I did discover earlier that the ones I've been using are not absorbent, but what do I do to stop my nipples sticking to my bra? And to stop the milk leaking everywhere? It seems there is quite a bit of it.

Provided the garage agree to MoT my car tomorrow afternoon instead of first thing, there is a support group meeting I can go to at 10.30 in the morning so I'm really only after advice for tonight. I am really hoping that someone can show me where I am going wrong as I have spent the majority of the night in tears as I love feeding her myself and I'm desperate to carry on. I feel hideous that I have been out to asda to get some formula to get us through the night. Made worse by the fact that she turned her nose up at it and clamped her lips shut.

Sorry it is yet another question but any hope/help you can offer me will be very much appreciated by the both of us.

Oh Harley you sound like me a few weeks ago!

Lilia did just what you're describing - small bits of nipple, excrutiating pain, me in tears especially at night, plus thrush!

If you think you have thrush go to your GP tomorrow and get treatment - the quicker it's treated the better, believe me.

As for latch - I did have ot feed through the pain. Turns out I hve fast letdown and poor Lilia was being drowned in milk - she still only uses the nipple now but has gone from 6lbs 3oz at birth to 13lbs today when she is 12 weeks and six days, so she is getting enough!

All I can say is that we finally cracked it when she was 10 weeks old, but we didn;t get help for the thrush ini time cos the stuff I was given first didn;t work - if the pain isn;t gone in four days go back to your GP.

Do ring the National BF helpline, plus La Leche League are also very helpful. I called both loads of times before I felt we got it right.

Don;t give up though!! It is worth persevering as Lilia is still exclusively breastfed at 13 weeks and I'm so proud of myself - halfway there now!

PS everyone - Lilia is finally asleep after 3 cluster feeds and a cry. No Calpol involved. Bless her, she must be worn out.
