Well it had to happen one day

After being a very happy user of Mooncup for over two years, today I dropped it down the loo

I was at home, I live alone and nobody else has used the upstairs loo (new bathroom) and it had been flushed (sorry if TMI but trying to give all relevant info) . I got a big plastic bag and stuck my hand in that before groping around the loo bowl to retrieve the mooncup...

What should I do? I soaked it in water with two sterilising tablets, then I boiled it for 5 minutes. Will it be ok now or should I just bin it? Am very aware of the dangers of 'bottom bugs' going into the vagina and so on and don't want to risk any nasty infections..

Any advice apart from bin it? Not very MS to do that....

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: - must admit I have dropped mine before (not down the pan though....) - I should think that having used sterilising tablets AND boiling for five minutes should have made it safe enough - although they are relatively cheap compared to disposables over the years - depends on how anxious you're going to be (have to say I'd still use it under the circumstances you describe). I do make sure the lid is closed before I re-insert though.

You'll find that cistern water is actually pretty clean, as it's fed from the same source as the rest of the household. In fact I have some customers who rinse their cups in the flush water. Okay this isn't a good idea if you have a bleach block!! So as long as your cup hadn't landed in some pee or poo, it will be fine, but a quick 5 min boil would put your mind at rest!

I'm not going to have internet access from 24th July until 16th August.
    Have a lovely summer!

Thanks for that - the water was completely clean and I'd cleaned the loo itself yesterday. I don't use the blue flush things or anything so there were no chemicals in there.

Have PM'd you about the other thing too - thank you :)

To anyone reading who hasn't yet tried the Mooncup I can only reiterate some of its benefits :-

No paying for tampons/towels every month. Mine paid for itself within about 4 months.
    Better for the Earth
I actually have much less pain now too, as do some other ladies I've seen on this thread.

Confirmed fan of the mooncup here. On my super heavy days I do back it up with a Naturacare pad too (I get through maybe two boxes of those per year, so it's still a massive saving) as the job I'm in means I can't always get a couple of minutes to go empty it when I need to. Man, when those things overflow, they really do get messy

I've been a cup user for over 2 years now, and I think they're brill.

After accidentially creamating my mooncup 1yr ago when I put the pan on to boil and then got lost in this site for an hour, I decided to try the Lunette. It's a slighlty more streamlined version of the mooncup which makes it a bit easier to clean.

They're available from Leastore in Finland along with lots of other styles- http://www.leastore.fi/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_111

If anyone is unsure about trying a menstrual cups, they offer a 6 month satisfaction guarantee. "You can take your time and study the use of the cup. You have a right to change the cup to another size of the same brand or have your money back within 6 months from the date of purchase."

For a review of lots of the cups out there check out this woman's comparisons and ratings http://menstrualcups.wordpress.com/2008/06/11/my-comparisons-and-ratings/

That's really good to see all the comparisons on this site.

I have a question..... What are the holes it talks about and that are they for?
Did I miss that bit in the reading?

    Hi Cinders

The holes are in all menstrual cups to help keep the cup 'non-leaky'. If they block, you can experience leaks!

That amazes me! Do I understand them to be in the rim?
I am sooo tempted to try one of these cuppies!

They are just under the rim :) I sell mooncups myself, but as you can see there are lots of different menstrual cups on the market, some better than others. They have changed some of my customers' lives as well saving you hundreds of pounds and the environment!
