A friend of mine uses one of these and thought about it then and this topic has made me think about it again.
How often should you empty it? Same as tampax? I mean the first few days I'm changing super plus every 2 hoursGreen and White Barmy Army!0 -
i think you would have to experiment, kr15snw, i have found i need to change less often than tampons, thoughMum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0

Hi - first time I've EVER posted on this site!
Been reading this thread and would add my enthusiastic voice to the mooncup movement. I've had mine nearly a year now and it's made life SO much easier and more comfortable - honestly, if you're teetering on the edge of buying one then DO give it a go.
Like one or two other posters, I still have a little persistent leaking on the first couple of days and can only assume that's because my periods are quite heavy. I was quite surprised to learn this by reading things on the mooncup site, actually - you always take what you know as 'normal', don't you?
So, to help out, I've been using disposable pads as well, just to be on the safe side - but I see in this thread that washable cloth pads are still available, so I'll be sorting myself out with some of those.
Just a practical idea for those who are concerned about things being a bit messy when away from your own bathrooms - I've always carried a little bottle of water and one of those travel pack of tissues with me since using the mooncup. Then I'm OK, whether the loo I use has paper or not.
And then just the other day, I had the bright idea of also putting in my bag one of the gloves I had left over from colouring my hair recently. Just as easy to rinse off (with your little bottle of water) as your fingers, no real trouble to carry around with you, and no more tell-tale fingernails to give you away!
My, I've posted a lot for a first message! Hope it's useful info for someone!
Lovely to be here, been lurking for ages.0 -

I too had to change my super plus every couple of hours and to be honest I bleed that heavy that I still have to change the mooncup every 2-3 hours for my heaviest days, but I wear a liner with it then aswell just for added protection. I still find it easier to use than tampons and for the lighter days I find I'm only having to empty each morning & night :TI may be shy, but that doesn't make me an angel0 -

Welcome OSW!:hello:
I'm in total agreement. I'd never heard of the Mooncup before I came to this site, but I bought one from a very nice seller on eBay a few months ago, and have never looked back! Many thanks!Overpay!0 -

I thought I remembered something from the instructions about how many times you should empty it each day. Just checked on the mooncup website and this is what they say: "We recommend that you remove and clean your Mooncup 4 times during a 24-hour day and that you boil it for 5 minutes between periods." You might not need to remove it that many times because your flow is light but they say that it prevents a build up of bacteria: http://www.mooncup.co.uk/menstrual_cup_faq.html0 -
Thanks for all your advice everyone!
I went out and bought mine on Friday (Boots - full price - but leaving the country on Tuesday so no time to mail order).
I'm so pleased that I'll not be spending money on (10p x16 x12 x the next 40 years!), and sending to landfill all those pads.
What a great idea! I probably wouldn't have bought it without reading about everyone else's experience on this thread. Sometimes gory, but useful, practical and inspiring as well. THANKS!!!:: No unapproved links in signatures please - FT ::0 -
How many of us use washable sanitary towels or mooncups? They're both really frugal and are fine once you've got past the "ick" factor! I can heartily recommend both and for those who don't already know, a mooncup is a little rubber cup which is used instead of a tampon, just gets washed out and re-used and they last about 10 years
Ooops, hope that's not too much info!
