Scottish Widows Demutualisation Payouts: £70 million still unclaimed!

I have spoken to Scottish Widows today, they said they could not provide the cheque number or the details of the account the cheque was paid into-so there is no proof the cheque was cashed or by whom !!! They suggested I contact my bank (which I did - but as I - nor the bank ever had sight of the cheque they cannot possibily run a trace on the transaction, so that came to nothing) Someone has my money and it was not me, this is fraud. I have filed an official complaint with Scottish Widows and registered with the Financial Ombudsman and have every intention of fighting for my money.0

I have the same experience as ukswf, they say my cheque was cashed on sept 6th 2000 but cannot provide me with cheque no or details of account it was paid into.
I did not receive the cheque or cash it, my old bank has provided statements back to sepetember 2001 and account notes back to 1995 but there is nothing in there that helps.
The more i talk to SW the more i feel they are pulling a fast one and hoping i give up. I have a recevied a letter from them saying they can give me no more info and i must take it up with the financial ombudsmen to take it further.
I have spoken to citizens advice and consumer direct who recommend the FO.
I have spoken to the FO and they say they would not take it up so i am interested in how far you have got with the FO , ukswf?
My next step is to submit a Subject Access Request to SW asking for all personal data they hold on me especially the demutualisation database.
Friends and family say i should get the police involved but would they be interested?
I have had lots of advice and comments like "SW should prove the cash has been chequed and should have reverse info on the cashed cheque" but every time i ask them for further info they say they have no further info to provide and are only legally obliged to keep data for 6 years etc etc
So i am stumped.0 -
Without Cheque numbers and account numbers where cheques have been paid into we cannot start fraud proceedings, I strongly believe in all fairness the onus is on Scottish widows prove the correct parties recieved the payment not the reverse. !!!0

Well this is going to be interesting. I have just filed a claim on line for a With Profits Pension and endowment polices I have with them. I think I have a letter somewhere which states that I was not entitled to any pay-out at all, hopefully I have not thrown it away. Now I find that this could be totally wrong information. During this period I moved house, luckily I have proof of this, and I am also a Lloyds TSB customer. What is bothering me is that SW would have had a record of my new address on their system, so why did they not contact me to tell me they had made a mistake about my eligibilty. Maybe I am jumping the Gun, I will now await with anticipation their next move. This sounds like a very big News story for maybe the Daily Mail, Times, etc...Debt Free!!!0

Why? Why is it in their interest when so much has been paid out?0 -

hi since getting letter stating a cheque had been sent 08/2000 and i then filled in on-line stating complaint to which i've had no reply from sw i'm not very good on the phone and get easily muddled so have been reluctant to call them they seem to be saying they issued cheque to all who qualified automatically can you see that happening and almost all on the same date the fos can't or won't help the police would not be interested (too much paperwork)so are we just fighting a losing battle if only someone could put us on right road i would put up a very good fight0

Margy have you done the following?
Response from Scottish Widows Hi,
I have been in contact with Scottish Widows, it says it should be able to provide policyholders with the date the demutualisation cheque was cashed; this will enable you to go to your bank and ask them for confirmation/statements.
Update 15 dec: Scottish Widows should also be able to provide the address the demutualisation cheque was sent to, the amount the cheque was for, the date it was sent and whether you took out a VIP account to have the money paid into.
It's going to get back to me next week on whether it's able to provide further details such as the address the cheque was sent to, amount, date sent to policyholder and if it can tell which bank it was paid in to.
They have asked that you contact them at SW_Demutualisation@scottishwidows.co.uk, putting “Payment Confirmation” in the subject line. They aim to get back to you within 3 weeks (depending on volume of enquiries).
To ensure that your enquiry is dealt with quickly, please include the below info in your email:- The date of the letter advising payment has already been made
- Full name (and maiden name if applicable)
- Date of birth
- National Insurance No
- Current address
- Address in June 1999
- Policy number
- Reference number on trace form
- Phone number
