I think the last post is typical of how the profession is perceived. People only believe what they want to and what suits their wallets. £600 sounds excessive - even for top end products. No doubt you're comparing exactly like for like products though.
Whilst I appreciate how it all appears to the public, all my comments are honest and factually based. This subject has been discussed before on this forum and I suspect will be again in the future.
I'm going to bow out on this thread as there is nothing further to add.Beware the character seeking personal gain masquerading as a moral crusader.

Thank you for your views and opinions, they do explain the other side to the argument very clearly and lucidly...we would all suffer if there were not any high st opticians, in my opinion your services should be more widely available and ideally people shouldnt have to pay any money for their eye health for the reasons stated in my earlier post, my only concern is the vast difference between high st and online prices.. in the instance I quoted above , i asked for the cheapest rimless thinnest lens possible for my partners high prescription as they always wear their contacts, there would hopefully be a difference in quality betwen the £42 and £600 ones, but I struggle to understand the vast difference!
Maybe opticians should ask customers to sign a petition asking for free eye tests every year, i have no doubt it would help the NHS budget by finding health problems sooner as there is no way people will lobby their mp's as most people do now have an alternative..the net!
once again, thanks for your honest opinion,I am just saying it the way I perceive it and fully understand your angst.. x
I too will bow out and hopefully the thread will go back on track about money saving ....
£8.50 delivered! that is cheap isn't it?If at first you dont succeed.............skydiving is not for you !0 -
A digital pupilometer for accurate PD measurement is at least £100 for a basic type. Maybe £3000 for a Keratometer, Over £1000 for an arm and Phoropter head, none of their gear is cheap, a chair can cost thousands. I don't hink they roll it in. I bet the equipment in an ordinary high St optician (testing, lab, workshop) would cost enough to put a decent deposit on a house. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. all i was saying is there is another side to the coin, I don't think every optician is raking it in but I don't think if you pay what they ask even if it is 0 they have any right to get in the huff about handing over the prescription etc.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. I ordered 2 pairs of these in the summer which took weeks to arrive, but when they did I was fairly pleased with them, especially as they were so cheap. One of the pairs were prescription sunglasses, so I paid extra for polarised lenses (good for driving when it's sunny as they cut glare out unlike normal sunglasses) which are of reasonable quality, not as good as my designer (non prescription) sunglasses but obviously they cost many times more!!
Anyway, the only reason I wasn't entirely pleased with them is that both frames (bougainville and aloe) had butterflies printed on the arms which looked cheap and nasty and the red frame had the red painted on white plastic rather than being solid red plastic which again makes them look cheap. So I only use the sunglasses for driving and the red pair around the house - if they'd been any more expensive I would have returned them.
Does anyone know if the new batch of frames still have butterflies embossed on the arms or if they're plain as the pictures show? I may take a chance on another pair if they're going to be plain!0 -
Thanks, used this voucher last time. Got a voucher that was around for free eye test, then got these glasses and wearing them as I type. Fantastic pair only downside is that they are a tiny bit small for my head, is there anyway of making them a little bigger if I order again?
What I did was: I went to high street shops, tried on glasses and wrote down the measurements of those that looked ok on my face (only kids frames!!!). You can find them inside the frame 135-40-20 or something like that.
Then go to selectspecs and see if they have frames similar to those measurements and same sort of shape. Also asked my boyfriend to measure the PD with a ruler.
It definitely worked for me!
And my experience with Selectspecs has been very good. They sent me the wrong frame at first, but the representative on the forum contacted me, chased the order and arranged for the right one to be sent. I'm not in a hurry, so no problems
Excellent customer service!
Still need to go into an opticians to see how much they charge me for adjusting the frame to my face...0 -
Just to warn anyone considering "Select Specs". I've had a very bad experience with Select Specs. I ordered some glasses for my son while he is away at university. They replied a week later to say they could not supply to his prescription. They had let me select his prescription online??
Then when i ordered some form yself it did not ask me for the delivery address and when the order confirmation came through they were going to send them to my son! I emiled then multiple times but they still ended up sending the specs to my son. They dont have a phone number! Now have to wait until Christmas to get them.........Nothing makes more cross than paying more than you0 -
Just asking about some information as my eyes are worse than the -6.00 in the description does anyone know of anywhere else to try?
I have tried Googles4u.com which are very cheap but i have a detailed prescription and they struggle to meet my specification. When e-mailing my complaints to them they were very helpfull and did replace them with a further 2 pair of glasses but yet again were close but not correct.
So now i am stuck between paying £388 for a pair from a high street retailer or trying Google4u again.
Thanks MSE
Johnpaul.
