What's the deal?[/title]
Specialist online glasses retailer SelectSpecs is again offering prescription lenses and frames for £5-8 plus £3.50 delivery. You get the frames AND lenses, plus more importantly anti-scratch, glare & UV protection.
While it's possible to get glasses online elsewhere for around a tenner, the extra lense protection would cost around £30. All these together would normally cost around £40 or even more from a high st retailer.

Which can you get?[/title]
There are 34 different styles of £5 frames (previously only eight), plus two semi-rimless styles for £8 to choose from. Currently there are around 10,000 pairs available on first come first serve basis, though the offer might be extended.

By law, opticians are obliged to provide you with a prescription. Once you have had a thorough eye test they must give you a copy of your prescription without requiring you to make a purchase.
When you order you'll need details to hand of your sphere, pupillary distance, cylinder and axis. More details in the Cheap Glasses article.

Warning. It's worth remembering this is a small company, and the MSE weekly e-mail goes to 3.7m people so its possible that it will be overwhelmed by the reponse from the weekly email. slowing things down. Bear this in mind when ordering. However the company has said that it has taken measures to improve order handling since the last time it did this offer.
In the past it has struggled to keep up with the demand from MoneySavers. However last time and again this time it has said it's more prepared. This is what it's said:
To be honest we did not anticipate the flood of orders that we received the first time. We have now bought more machines, employed more staff and tripled the size of our lab in the 6 weeks since our original promotion.
We are quite confident that we will be handle future orders of the same magnitude quite comfortably. However, as a measure to prevent any backlogs that may occur due to overwhelming demand we will temporarily pause the offer until such backlogs are cleared and kindly ask our customers to come back later to place their order.
Please be assured that we never ignore any emails from our customers and every inquiry is individually checked and responded to within 1 hour in most cases. Customers can also contact us with simple queries via Twitter - http://twitter.com/selectspecs/

Why's it doing this?[/title]
It says it wants to do this to give something back to customer but more likely is it knows this is a great way to get publicity and let people know about its site.

These prescription glasses come with anti scratch, glare and uv coatings plus thinner lenses all in starting at £5, and there is a good selection at this price. Sure they are trying to buy you in with these, but you can't go wrong at that price.
I bought a couple of pairs thinking that I had nothing to lose, and they are really good. I have since bought some prescription sunglasses which are not part of this offer, but even those are excellent value.
Delivery is around 3 weeks and it is really easy to order and put in your prescription. They take any payment including paypal
** Here ** is the link to the £5 page.0 -
I have also bought from this company and the glasses are great. I bought the rimless pair and the red thick pair, great quality for all in a fiver!Who says shopping isn't a hobby?!!0

No good if your prescription is outside -6:00 to +6:00 like me
However - cracking deal otherwise!! Good spot!0 -
I am going to order some for my husband tomorrow. Hopefully we have his prescription but if not do we just call the optician for it?“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

When you order, you fill in an on screen prescription which looks just like your form. I think you need to get a copy. The only 'problem' is that you need your pupilliary distance for the prescription. You can order a special ruler for this, but I just had my wife mark my glasses with a felt pen and measured the distance 3 times and took the average. No problem.
I did ask the optician to do it for me, but you would have thought I was asking him to donate a lung.0 -
do they call up your optician to check your prescription?
reason i ask is that my prescription has just run out and i am putting off getting another one. probably should though, if anyone know of any free eye test deals let me know!

oops just saw the "here " bit. sorry......0 -
I ordered the Msasa glasses - took a few weeks to arrive, as expected at the price. Really pleased that they look sturdy enough for me to not break, and they're small enough that they don't look odd on my face (most glasses completely dwarf me)
I got my mum to measure my pupillary distance with a ruler.. seemed to work okay!
Only negative is that they get quite a bit of glare if I wear them at night - I get lines of glare running from street-lights to the end of my nose.. quite trippy! - so I don't think I'd want to drive in them.
