What you pay to have your eyes tested (if anything!) doesn't come anywhere near to covering the actual cost of an eye test. The tests are subsidised by the opticians on the basis that they offset the loss against making some profit from customers buying glasses. They are not a charity there to provide you with a free eye test, free PD measurements etc that you then take elsewhere to buy specs. Thats how they make a living and feed their families.
That is their fault then for not pricing appropriately. If I pay for an eye test I have paid the price they asked, they are obliged by law to give me the results, I feed my family pay my rent etcetera by being careful with my money. They get paid more for doing an eye test than they do for sitting waiting for something to happen. Free eye tests for entitled groups are paid for by the public as well, they get money from the tax payers to do them. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Not blaming customers. Just correcting the person that said that the Optician is not losing out as they have been paid for the eye test and educating those who seem to be querying why the optician won't give happily their professional time to take free measurements for them to buy their glasses elsewhere!
As with most things in life you get what you pay for.
I did not say they were not losing out I said they are getting paid one way or another. Maybe you need your eyes tested?

I'm not getting into a slanging match with you and I really don't feel you need to be rude. You are quite right you said " they are getting paid one way or another" but the implication from that is that what they are paid for the test covers it and I was just pointing out that it doesn't. Rightly or wrongly maybe - but I was just pointing it out.
The point I made about free eye tests was in relation to special offer vouchers not groups who qualify for an NHS test. I did not bring into question the fact you are entitled to a copy of your prescription but I was pointing out that the measurements you need to order the glasses are entirely different to the prescription. I only made this point to explain why the optician would not willingly take these measurements for you free of charge so someone could use them elsewhere.
That doesn't mean I need my eyes tested or that I need your rudeness. I was providing you and others reading this site with information.
As for your new point about them getting more money for doing a sight test than "waiting for something to happen". Actually that appointment could have been used for someone else so they would not just sit about waiting for something to happen they would be doing another sight test.
It's fair enough if you want to chance your own measurements and buy cheap specs online but understanding the story behind it and going into it with your eyes wide open(!) is all I was aiming for.MTC NMP Membership #62 - made it back to size 12 after my children & I'm staying here!0 -
I've just come back from Vision Express where I paid 25 for an eye exam!!! When I asked if they could tell me the pupillary distance they told me it would cost another 30 poundsto do so !!! Now tell me that that isn"t a rip off!!!loobylou2.Proud to be dealing with my debts and aiming to sort out the mess in 2013!!!!:eek:0

Many thanks for making me aware of this fantastic deal! :money:
I managed to get a free eye test at D&A some weeks ago using a coupon from a magazine, I got my prescription no problem it was all very straight forward. They found that apparently my glasses had something called "prism" added in one lens, when I didn't actually require it.
The service I'd received from my usual opticians (Specsavers) last time was pretty atrocious, I had to have not one, not two but three replacement pairs of glasses before they actually manufactured a pair that was mostly correct/undamaged. Of course I didn't know about the prism mistake either.
I didn't get any glasses from D&A as my prescription had changed very little and their prices were extremely expensive. A few weeks after the test they sent me a rather hefty discount offer in the post but I still held out.
I've now ordered some glasses from SelectSpecs and they look pretty much identical to my old designer Quiksilver ones, the difference being approx. £100 or so? - this pair only £11.50 with all the coatings, and delivery too, can't be bad.
I don't feel one bit guilty for having a free eye test at D&A, they give out coupons and online offers obviously to get you in and hope you'll get your glasses from them, there is absolutely no obligation to buy your glasses off them and I'm very happy I have more money to spend on the missus as a result of MSE0 -
I ordered some semi rimless ones 3 weeks ago and they arrived yesterday. Fantastic for the £8 charge and really trendy. I have now ordered another pair in black and am awaiting their arrival. At this price I can afford one for each outfit!
Also the anti-glare is great for work, I would recommend it, I was charged £28 for anti-glare on my last specs, got 2 sets from selectspecs for that price.
As for the pupillary distance, I too was questioned why I wanted it by the optician and they had a big discussion as to why it was required and that they couldnt release that information! Therefore, I walked to another optician down the road asked them to measure it for me, they did and then said, "are you ordering glasses online?" so I said "yes, how much do I owe you?" they said, nothing we will do it for free. How come my own optician holds the information like the secret service, but the other one is giving it away????0 -

It's not quite that black and white Loobylou2. The PD measurement is the legal responsibility of whoever is dispensing the specs. If they give you that measurement, they are taking on that legal responsibility and could be liable to resolve any problems you might have for a dispensing which they have no control over. Would you do that for no charge?
Just to answer the other debate going on above, the average cost to provide an eye exam after taking into account overheads such as staff, rent, electricity, equipment, rates etc is between £50-£60 and that's before the optician gets paid. The NHS currently pays £19.80. Makes the eye test a bit of a bargain really!Beware the character seeking personal gain masquerading as a moral crusader.

Fair enough, I take your point about the legal responsibilities of the situation but I still think that the charge is too high, particularly having seen on the website that I could buy a ruler and do the job myself for the princely sum of 10p!!! Can I ask how much Opticians actually earn though because I'm sure its an awful lot more than I do!!! Maybe I should retrain to become one!!! Also I should have said many thanks to the OP, its an excellent offer as far as I'm concerned because I'm having problems with my sight at the moment, need glasses but just don"t have the cash to be able to afford to pay for them at the opticians, this will be a big help. My employers are paying for my test today but they won"t pay for the glasses as well!!!loobylou2.Proud to be dealing with my debts and aiming to sort out the mess in 2013!!!!:eek:0 -
