i have to admit freecycle came to my resuce about a month ago.

Due to some unknown reason our computer monitor gave up the ghost (went caput in an epic fashion... you name the colour and the screen produced it). so my girlfriend and I were left without a computer. Were both students and couldn't afford to buy a monitor... cheapest i could find was £50 for a 15" second hand decent monitor.

posted on freecycle just to try my luck (i just asked if anyone had a spare monitor, expecting to get a CRT) and an absolutely lovely gentlemen offered me a 15" flat screen dell, in perfect working order, that i'm using at this very moment. He was lovely to meet as well, very happy chap indeed and one which im glad was so generous; im very thankful.

Unfortunately however, being a student means i'm not so much able to contribute to freecycle. I'm sure ill return the favour for other people in years to come though, when i have a house and my own furniture or electricals etc that could be put to a better use by someone else.

Does anyone else find the freecycle site reeeeaaalllllyyyyy slow?

I find the Freecycle website extremely slow, so slow in fact that I never go on it unless I really need to.

I have not got the time to wait 5 mins for a page to load up, I prefer the groups that are run on Yahoo groups, Yahoo may have problems but they are nowt compared to my freecycle.

Any official MSE objections to starting something similar on this site? I think the forum set up on here is much much better than those on freecylce.org due to theauto emails and PM service on here....

    I don't know....

It would need to be worked out well. Britain is a big place and at least Freecycle is broken down into towns for ease.

I only find it slow when I am using my Moderating Software, so I turn it off when i'm browsing.

I was kinda thinking regions... so like Borders, North East, North West, Yorkshire, Midlands etc etc

And then maybe sub forums inside them for each county

We have been very lucky over the years and have given shed loads away, the best thing we have received by far is a surround sound unit from a wonderful man!!

Last year I got a bag full of my size summer tops which I wore and wore and wore took on holiday and wore everywhere

My neighbour gave me a list of stuff she still needed for her baby which is due in March (they are on such a low income its daft) She wanted a sofa bed, steraliser and rocking chair. Managed all of them from freegle but the sofa bed she lost as waited to long to collect it.

It really is a fabulous system :)

I've met some wonderful people through freecycle/freegle which more than makes up for the few idiots that abuse it or dont turn up!

I've given away lots of outgrown kids clothes, bikes and toys; bedroom drawers, duvet sets, tellys, videos, cds and books

In return I've managed to get many things we needed including 3 sets of matching velour curtains that fitted the two massive bay windows at the front of the house, dehumidifier, hoover, food steamer, indoor rabbit cage and an adorable dumbo rat and our youngest dog (before freecycle banned posts for pets).

My favourite freegles include the one where somebody regularly saved me all their shredded papers for me to use as pet bedding, the woman who posted asking for a dog coat and reminded me about the one that my dog had outgrown but fit hers perfectly and the hugely successful tomato plants we received last year that gave us a constant supply of tomatoes to pick!

    I gave away a fridge-freezer and a printer.

Then they transfered the site to something on Yahoo. You have to open a Yahoo account (I don't want to) and use Yahoo email for contact (Oh no, not anorther email account!) Plus it's really slow.

Don't use it any more. Too much trouble.
  • @ Geordie Ben, its not Freecycle that gets slow its Yahoo generally.
