Are you sure they're worms ... and not leatherjackets, eelworms or some other bug?

Can you take and post a picture?

Thanks Debt-Free-Chick, it didn't occur to me to keep one and photograph it. If I come across some more, as I'm sure I will as they'll be plenty of weeding to come, then I'll do as you suggest.

    Many thanks

Without seeing them I'd hazzard a guess that they're probably thread worms. DS1 found some in the soil on our allotment and wasn't too impressed when I told him they are one of the reasons you need to wash your hands after digging in mud(and why).

It's very helpful community. Wish I'd found it before I started the wormery, and made all the usual mistakes (like overfeeding).

    Hope it helps.

thanks for the link !! hopefully my fly problem will go now !!
  • Hi-I wonder if anyone could give any advice,please....trying to do my bit for the environment, and anticipating our council going the same way as a lot of others, and switching to fortnightly collections,I was wondering if it`s worth getting a wormery:D However,as they seem to be quite expensive,I thought I`d ask whether anyone has any experience of them,And if they are worth having, could give me some pointers as to which ones are the best.If anyone can help,I`d appreciate it :T THANKS!

Just been searching the web to find out some more information about wormeries and whether it would be better for me and my husband to get a wormery or a composter. Have found a site that explains what can be put in a wormery to find that one thing they suggest not putting in a wormery is potato peelings and that is the one thing I was hoping to be able to put in there as we have pototo peelings at least once a week. Does anyone with a wormery put potato peelings in theirs and is it ok?

Yes, me, Lyndsedee! Unfortunately they are growing like mad and I have to keep pulling them up and breaking them into pieces. The worms love it when I do that, too. The stems of potatoes are so fragile and crisp that it's no great trouble at all. So, I'd say - don't worry about it. Put your peelings in and give the worms a treat.

I am a new-ish wormery owner and a long term composter. I produce quite a lot of kitchen and garden (veg) waste so I could never give all my waste to the worms, it would just overfeed them, so IMO you would need a composter as well.

I see the composter as an essential, the wormery as a useful, interesting extra.

I guess the wormery would be more important if you had no garden, and produced only a little waste.

As recommended above, I have found the recycle-works forums to be very very useful.
