This should be made into a sticky!
Thanks Jimdog...........
I'm not sure that people realise what a big deal this will be if BER is not renewed. They'll soon be moaning when it hits them where it hurts - in their pockets..... be too late then, if it isn't already..
When they find they can't download info re their cars and have to go to dealers to sort it.... that will be painful.Genie

That is the point cos we won't have the choice any more but to go to them for diagnostics etc and have to pay a fortune! :eek:0 -
its the holding to ransom for the servicing that gets me. the holding information thing i can understand to a certain degree.
it helps me at my work and helps keep my company busy as we are a dealer for a major manufacturer and without us having exclusive rights to use certain types of software it would mean anyone could have a go at doing what i do without the proper training behind a lot of the stuff in said manuals and software.this could work in our favour as a lot of the knowledge is stored up top and not all on the disc so it could create work thats been f***ed up by others, but i dont think its worth the risk, most folk who buy our machines know the value in getting us to do thier service and maintenance and most are happy with it,it does create a lot of goodwill between us and our customers, its a bit different from the car game though.
if you make something why should you have to share it with everyone else so they can reap the rewards of your labour, research and development?...work permit granted!0 -
But Goldie, and I really understand where you are coming from, if you have a car that is out of warranty, say three and a half years old. You have an engine management light come up - your local independent cannot diagnose the problem as they do not have access, you have to go to the dealership. Would you be happy about that?
Or, you break down, AA or similar come along and they can't diagnose it either, so tow you to the nearest dealership...
Meanwhile, motor factors aren't selling well because all the the independents are struggling and they can't make pattern parts.... and the parts companies are laying people off... so now you have a whole lot of people out of work worldwide and the dealerships are thriving off your hard earned money and they can charge what they like because you and I have absolutely no choice.
We should all be able to choose where we go - free trade and all that...Genie

well you do, dont buy a new car, keep your old one or buy one that can be easily diagnosed without the need for new equiptment. then when the sales of these new cars really takes a tumble and the manufacturers arent selling them they might come to some compromise about this....work permit granted!0 -

I love your optimism! But why should we all drive old cars? Or buy newer ones and hope the dealerships have a heart of gold? Mmmmm ....... I don't think so...Genie

buy ones where they do have a heart of gold then. its the only way you could change thier minds on this if you dont buy thier product.
but i doubt there is enough folk out there who really worry too much about the servicing of thier car to make this a deciding factor when purchasing the new car. colour, style, size, seating arrangement, badge snobbery are all probably higher in the list than who can or cant service it in a few thousand miles....work permit granted!0 -
That is a bit of a cynical view - but they will be soon moaning after badge novelty has worn off and they get the bills :rotfl:goldspanners wrote: »buy ones where they do have a heart of gold then. its the only way you could change thier minds on this if you dont buy thier product.
