  • Hi April Brides and Grooms!

I'm also an April 17th bride! Who would have thought it would be such a popular date?? We chose it because our honeymoon is to Florida so timed it around best time to go there!

We've saved money by doing our own invites, I'm making the wedding cakes (cupcakes on each table, doubles up as centerpieces) and having ceremony & reception in one place.

Most things are organised now, need to make the invites soon ready to send out in Jan, buy rings and OH needs to sort the suits out (I'm having no input in that, eek!).

Does anyone know anything about the jewellery shops in Manchester? I've heard that there is a jewellery quarter of sorts around the Cheetham Hill area but don't know names of shops or where to look. Does anyone have any advice on that?

  • Its great to read everyone's posts. I have been a little lazy recently and not got much done, more thinking then doing unfortunately. BUT I'm back on track (or getting there) just started to make my invites, had menu tasting and loved it all. Taken my dress to alterations lady and realyl happy with what shes going to do to it, bought my shoes, underwear and the gents have had their suit fittings. I'm just hoping things fall into place one by one!!!! Keep posting guys, really helpful to know what I should be doing!

    Update time....

Making some good progress. I have had my first toile fitting for my dress - we changed the neckline and the sleeves. Petticoat is being made so we can see how the dress will fall over the top before work on the actual dress begins. Dressmaker is visiting relatives in New Zealand for the next 6 weeks so have booked my next appointment for 5th Feb. Won a pair of Jasper Conran shoes on eBay for only £4.70 (including postage). Right style and colour, just a tad tight, so may have to look for some more, tut!

DF now has his suit, shirt and tie so only needs shoes.

All travel arrangements are made and paid for - now just need to research hotels en route and plan our 3 day stop over in Rome. Have also booked flights for my daughter, sister and both their partners - the only family that are coming out (one or two friends have threated to as well, so will wait and see what happens there)

Have booked venue for the party when we come back and have arranged for 2 friends to do the dj'ing. Just deciding on food - have had quotes for a hog roast but having nothing to compare it against I don't know if £750 for approx 200 sandwiches is a good price or not  Also made the party invites and sent them out with Christmas cards (very MSE)

As we both have time off the week before Christmas we are going to go and sort out copies of DF marriage certificate and decree absolute as he cannot find them anywhere. We will need these before January when we go to get our certificate of no impediment which has to be sent off to our wedding planner.

That's about it for now :D

    Hi Cleomolly!

Sorry I wasn't very clear with my post was I? There is a jewellery quarter in Birmingham, meant to be quite good although I've never been. I had just heard that there is a kind of mini version of that in Manchester ie some independent jewellery shops in the Cheetham Hill area that are significantly cheaper than the chain stores. I can't find any info on it though! Really just need to know whether they are open Sundays as that's the only day me and the OH have off together and also where they are!

  • hi all, we gave notice on Monday, so date is confirmed now. We also have a venue for the wedding breakfast provisionally booked. Menu should be about £25 per head. So much still to do but I am finding it hard to do wedding stuff with Christmas on the way. Need to collect dress next week though - so thats exciting. Is everyone sending out save the date cards or do you think an email may be ok ?

Well our date is set as April 9th. We're in the process of booking the reception venue, just need to send the contract and deposit back, but they're holding the date for us so no worries. Church has been booked for a while, and my dress has been ordered from Milly (they sent test dress pics the other day - yay!). I've planned the design for the invites, I still need to order the paper though.

So far, we've come in below budget on some things, and a liiiittle over budget on the reception... but we got a really good deal because it's a Friday in April so off season.
    Saving for a house deposit.

Trying to sort clutter and sell as much as possible to make room and money!
  • Hi :) We're getting married on April 10th at Manchester Art Gallery. This is the venue for the ceremony and the reception which is fab and has cut out lots of planning.

So far I have ordered my dress and veil (due January), bought bridesmaids dresses, sorted mother of the bride/groom outfits, decided on a menu, made and sent out invites, booked a registrar, booked a fantastic photographer, booked a make up artist, booked hairdressers, booked a hotel, got wedding insurance and been getting facials and joined the gym for the run up to the day!

Still to go is booking a DJ, buying shoes and underwear, hair and make up trials, buying a wedding ring, hiring men's suits, choosing a first dance (and persuading OH to have some dance lessons), ordering a cake from M and S, buying wine and champagne (tonight hopefully) and sorting out public liability insurance for 10 million.

If anyone has got any idea where you can get public liability insurance for 10 million I would appreciate a heads-up!

Blackpool Rox - there are a couple of jewellry shops in Cheetham Hill, though not so many that it would be worth you coming just to look around them, I wouldn't have thought. There's no more than a handful of small shops really. But if you're looking to shop in that style of shop there may be some more in other areas such as Levenshulme, Longsight and Rusholme. So maybe make a day of it and go around Manchester having a look!
  • Since you haven't gotten to Men's Suits, I'd recomment Aspetto Formal Wear. They're based out of United States and are New. Really nice guys. They can probably get special orders for you guys at an insanely good price. check em out at shopaspettodotcom
You'll have to email them asking for ideas.

ooh can i join this thread - we're getting married on April 24th - also my 30th birthday!!
so far have only paid the deposit for the registrar, booked the venue and got my dress (perfect and £100 in a sale!) so its all go as soon as new year is out of the way to get everything else booked.
we're on a very tight budget but luckily we have a friend who is making the invites, another friend who is a wedding photographer, and lots of other offers of help. we're getting married in cumbria (150 miles away from home) and we're trying to keep numbers down to 30-40 people.
its very exciting but very scary - the next few months are going to fly by! good luck to the rest of you!! :) xx
Trying to jump back onto the moneysaving wagon ....
