Hi
I'm exactly the same as you & I use a combination of sun block & bronzer. Even my daily facial moisturiser/foundation has a sun block built into it. I wouldn't consider a natural sun tan worth the blisters and even more especially as pale skinned red heads are just about the most vulnerable group to skin cancer. In fact, I flee for cover when the sun comes out.
I find Ambre Solaire sun block the best, it lasts for ages & I have never found a cheaper alternitive which works so well or for so long. I like the Body Shop's self tan lotion (comes in a range of shades but none of them orange!) & their bronzing mitt for even coverage, neither of which are expensive.
Sorry if this isn't what you want to hear but having suffed quite bad sun burn too many times in the past I am a bit paronid about limiting the damage now.Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

(except my eyes are brown). I hate the sun, it gives me headaches, and I burn in about 10 mins.
Don't think of it as a suntan, think of it as sun-damage. That's all a tan is really, sun damage. If you're getting a 'tan', then you're not properly protected.
I do the same as Lillibet, use a sunblock. I don't use a bronzer though, I can't apply it properly and end up looking like an orangeBulletproof0 -
:j thank u fellow suffers have you try sun beds do they work :j0

Go for pale and interesting! It's the only way. I've been known to burn in the time it takes to put suncream on the three boys!
If you search in the I wanna board for suncream, there's a mention of P20, which is a once a day application of sun cream but you have to let it 'set' for 90 minutes before you go out in the sun. Alternatively there's Prosport, which is a once a day preparation, available in Factor 44, designed for windsurfing, sailing and mountaineering! I bought some last year, can't say how good it was because we didn't really see the sun.I have also seen once a day preps in Boots etc. And I stock up on the suncream wipes when they are on BOGOF and keep a pack in my bag for those days when you go out and it's cloudy, and then the sun comes out and you're 'caught short' as it were. For kids they are brilliant but I like them myself, I might be tempted not to bother to faff around with a bottle of lotion, but a quick wipe of any exposed bits is easy and less messy!

You want help to gain a tan but protect you from the sun.I believe that the only way to protect you from the sun and gain a tan is by applying a fake tan.......and this would be the safe way to tan. Remember that a sun tan is an indication of radiation burns to your skin.........which may result in skin cancer.........and at the very least wrinkles.
OK, I'll get off my soap box now and offer some advice.;) No offence meant.
I have fair skin too and do everything possible to avoid sun burn or sun tanning. One problem I used to have was protecting my scalp from the sun when playing sport. It's too hot and impractial to wear a hat when playing sport so I bought some Simple Hair & Scalp Protector SPF15. You apply the cream to your scalp 20 minutes before going into the sun. It isn't greasy (oil free formulation) and it works. I can recommend this product.
I am not connected to the company, just a highly delighted customer.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Give blood, save a life. 0 -

I shudder to admit that I have used them in the past & actually acheived a "reasonable sun tan" result but I wouldn't go near one now, they are just as bad for the skin as sun damage if not even worse as they are unatural & don't have any of the benefits of sunshine:oPost Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

This is NOT TRUE. I had a skin problem and was referred to the hospital for UV treatment in a very powerful stand up tanning machine. They did a patch test and my tolerance was around 20 seconds. So I had to go in twice a week for 20 seconds and this was built up. I've never looked so good, before or since (except the Panda eyes!)0 -
I stand corrected lipidcman, although personally I still wouldn't advocate them for general tanning:oPost Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
