I'd already had a google - I thought you might well go for that suggestion.

It looks as if you ask Natural England about it - as they administer the Nature Reserve????

http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/

Sites about Lundy:

www.lundyisland.co.uk

www.lundy.org.uk/

www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lundy

I thoroughly approve of that thought - distinctive positive vibes on that...

I can picture you there in that photo of the jetty and harbour on the wikipedia site....

Hope they have something available for you now.

That would suit you.
• Definately, definately interested,:j but can't see anywhere saying that I would get accomodation and food! I could live without the pocketmoney if I had t:rolleyes:o, but really do need to be sure on the accomodation front before I apply...

sorry I forgot the link, thank you Ceridwen,

Pop it in your email, I know when I was there they we were shown the "volunteers accomodation" and asked not to disturb the volunteers when they were not working.

Also the set up of Lundy really gives no option than for food and accom to be provided as there is nowhere else to stay than the accomodation there, no cars, no tv, there is a phone in the inn, and I expect another phone somewhere on the site for emergencies etc.

The request for volunteers in the inn said that food and accom was part of it as well, I was there in 2008. It is a truly wonderful place.

Ceridwen, they do take people for working weeks etc so maybe a weeks holiday from work would give you some time there if its something you would like to experience. I was taught to fix drystone walls in my week there. I volunteered for 4 days and chilled for 3 days.

As far as I can work out - I think the "route to take" to enquire about this would be:

http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ourwork/enjoying/gettinginvolved/volunteering/volunteerregister/default.aspx

and fill in the form that there is a link to in upper righthand corner - mentioning that, for instance:

"I am specifically hoping to have the chance of volunteering on Lundy Island - but am open to suggestions for similar opportunities. I am looking for a placement, hopefully, of about one year in length - somewhere where I could undertake outdoor work. I would need accommodation and just sufficient pocketmoney for my personal needs".

What I have to offer:
"I love outdoor work and am fit and healthy and willing to work hard".

*********************************************

If that isnt the correct "route in" - perhaps someone else might be able to assist on this thread?

Hmmm....checking further through that Lundy site Vij mentions - I guess what one specifically does to apply is send an email stating one would like to be a volunteer to:

info@lundyisland.co.uk

That does sound the best way Ceridwen, mine was organised by a company a friend used to work for, I was lucky enough to get the spot when someone dropped out.

Thanks to those who posted the links to Lundy island - I will definitely be looking into that for my 'holiday' next year!

I went to Lundy on a family holiday years and years ago and loved it, and have always intended to go back. Sadly holidays have been unaffordable for many years now, but this looks like it could be a solution.

It sounds like I'm not the only person thinking along these lines so Lundy might end up with an influx of MSE forum members!

the other option that might suit would be a live in job such as a mother's help? you'd get company, bed & board, pocket money, lots of active playtime if you choose the right children...!

Hmmmm....<strokes chin thoughtfully> - errrrr......<cough> 'tis just my own personal feeling here....but....errr.....but I have done a mothers help job briefly myself way back in the mists of history - and 'twas a mistake for me personally....

....it was one of the things that confirmed to me personally that I DIDNT want children of my own - or to look after anyone else's either ever again....;):D. I'm sorta inclined to think that someone wouldnt become a nun if they were a "child-focused" sort of person....I may be wrong on that one...Nowt either right or wrong with being "child-focused" or otherwise - some of us are/some of us arent...thats just how 'tis....

Maybe I'm just looking at this "through my own eyes" personally...must admit I'm still thinking something of a voluntary nature in the countryside sounds good to me for faithcecilia (who am I to presume? - but thats what is personally resonating with me as "A GOOD IDEA"). Faith may like the idea - I'm just a tad worried in case ....having read about various families taking on people in a childminder type role and then being summat exploitative of the person and I dont want that happening to Faith.....
