Has anyone had a laser top up, please advise??

    Any dangers??

What should I be asking them before I decide to go ahead with the laser top up??

My Wife had laser eye surgery about 2 years ago now. She went from -7.0 and -7.5 to -1 and -1.25 after the first treatment. She had a laser top up again with intralase flap cutting and wave front treatment a few months later as advised by our consultant and now is perfect vision. The top up is just the same as having the initial surgery. Only risks are not having enough cornial thickness to correct. However this is likely to have been mentioned in your original treatment if it was likely to be a problem. My wife's thickness was so borderline the first consultant refused to do the initial treatment. Subsequently they bought in a different specialist who did both operations.

Most experience factor to consider is the experience of the Surgeon. No good having the best technology if the Surgeon is not experienced in its use, better to have a highly experienced surgeon who knows his equipment very well (IMHO).

Does anyone know how you'd go about finding this out? Presumably they'd all say they're top notch. I have seen that Daily Mail article advise that you ask them whether they have a 'certificate of competance' from the Royal College of Opthalmologists (means they've done at least 300 surgeries), which is helpful.

Ultralase have a list of their surgeons and information on them on their website. Not sure about other companies though.

    Hi guys

Really want to get my eyes done now, have been thinking about it for years but keep putting it off.

I have an astigmatism in one eye and my prescription is -4.75 in both eyes, i think. I did to go to optimax last year for a consultation and was told i'd need epi-lasik as i have thin corneas - has anyone else had this done?

What was it like please? Really want to get it done in the next few weeks, but getting nervous just thining about it!
i had laser eye surgery at optimax in 2001, and still have perfect vision. I had lasek (sp?) surgery (where they scrape the cornea rather than flap-cut)
i found that the more i thought about it the more worried i got so i just went for it!! one of the best things i have ever done, i still marvel that i can see leaves on trees when i wake up!!:j
    Smoke free since 30/01/13 :j

    1. ask the company the surgeon works for. ask for a resume if they dont provide one.

    2. google searches
    3. try lasik eyes forum
    4. get feedback from others who have used the same surgeon - from the clinic, from websites etc

BTW i found in my research that not all surgeons have the certificate from the RCO. It is not compulsory, although it is compulsory that they register with the NHS or BMA (cant remember which one now) to undertake surgery in the UK .
  • Been thinking about laser for many years but have always been a bit scared a few things have changed my mind
reading about the newer technology automatic tracking which has alleviated my nightmares.
Sudden inability to read small print- magnigying glass in supermarket:eek:
I couldnt cope with 2 pairs of specs

But on reading this thread i get the impression that i am now not suitable for laser cos of a change in vision
Dont want to pay for consultation or get my self pyched up if its a no goer from the start -
Can some one please explain and advise
    many thanks

I don't mean to sound patronising, but aren't you suitable for bifocals?
  • I need to glare at the kids at the back of the class whilst writing on whiteboard or using computer. Also i play golf and loads have said to me they cant focus on the ball for puts etc I am fed up with trying to look through raindrops on my glasses to see when playing.
I had just got to th stage were i would treat myself after so many years - i remember my nan getting bi-focals centries ago now it seems and she couldnt focus - i suppose it depends on life sty;e and what you are doing. contacts no good for me either !
    need to get sorted

Most companies have free no obligation consultations. I had mine done in Ultralase recently. It is a bit of a pain having to wear reading glasses now. Went to opticians yesterday and I'm getting varifocal glasses which are clear on the top, different prescription in the middle for my computer and slightly stronger on the bottom for reading. I will only need these for work (and they are paying) but it does seem a backwards step. Having said that it's great to be able to drive without glasses and I'm looking forward to spending time around the pool on holidays which was previously a nightmare. Will need tinted reading glasses to read my book though!
  • thanks for sharing your experiences - you just reminded me worse than the pool on holiay is going for a swim in the sea then walking up and down th bach looking for anyone you know and waving at people you dont know.
How did you decide who to go with ? Did you get any sort of "deal " ?
