It's council pop in our house or nothing. They occasionally drink milk, but I'd go beserk if they were drinking that much. Over 2 year old no one NEEDS the amount of milk we drink in this country, and juice is full of fructose, easily converted sugars yuck.

I agree no one needs to drink so much milk but some children like it.
Mine did and even though they would have about three pints each of full cream milk everyday whilst growing up it never made them have weight problems then or at any other time (they're all in their 30s now) All three of them also have beautiful strong white teeth,so it must have done them some good.
As for fruit juices, there realy is'nt much goodness in them for a growing child is there.
  • I use so much milk that I often joke to my DH that it wouldbecheaper andeasier to have a cow in the garden. We use 12-14 pints a week of whole milk I tend to buy whats on offer usually from farmfoods/iceland but sometimes asda/tesco/sainsburys depending on the deals. We are a family of 4.

That's because full cream/fat milk isn't particularly high in fat. Look at the label and it will say 3.6%. For a food to be labelled 'low fat' it must have less than 5% fat. Therefore I would say it was a low fat food. It really bugs me that whole milk has got this unfair reputation of being a high fat food. I bet most people would be surprised to learn the fat content is so low. They've been brainwashed by the food police.

Another thought for reducing your milk bill Skint Single Mum is too mix it half and half with made up dried milk.

if you decide you want to keep buying as much milk - camoflage your share by decanting some into an innocuous opaque container and pop in the back of the fridge - and don't feel you are wrong when you decide what is right for you to do. At least it's something healthy they're hogging - I know plenty of families who get through this much coke a week - and with fewer kids too!

I would highly recommend this - it used to work all the time when I was house sharing as a student. Just hide enough at the back of the fridge for your coffee in a lock-tight tupperware box or a sports drink bottle.

I hate getting up in the morning and having no milk for my tea!

    Hi All
I used to drink semi skimmed milk which I got for £1 for four pints at Sainsburys.
Then I hit on the idea of buying full fat and diluting it with the same amount of water.
I now buy the full fat 4 pints size from Aldi and add the water. Bingo! -8 pints for 99p.
Tastes lovely if you have been used to semi skimmed/skimmed and I think the calories compare well. This has saved me LOADS.
  • But aren't you diluting the calcium, vitamins A & D and protein in the milk?

You would be diluting everything, but if half a pint per person per day is enough nutritionally then getting a diluted pint will still give them everything they need
  • When I have all three of my teenagers at home-eldest is at university-I go through 14, 2 litre bottles of milk a week. It costs me a fortune but I don't begrudge the money because I would far rather they drank milk than the quantity of fizzy drinks a lot of their friends drink. They all have good teeth unlike their cousins who drink vast quantities of fizz and have rotten teeth already by primary school age.

I have it delivered once a week and freeze it and get it out the night before to defrost. My three very rarely drink the last of the milk though. They know that I expect some left for a cup of tea and if it is getting low they drink something else.
