You all must have monster fridges to put those 6l bottles in them - I could squeeze maybe one in at a time???

I also freeze milk, there's no shops where i live so keep a 2 pinter in the freezer. take it out a night and its defrosted by the morning. I buy 16 pints a week and there's only 2 adults and one 9 year old child, i only have milk in coffee, so where does it all go. may be the milk fairy drinks it

It's all very well suggesting juice as an alternative, but you'd be hard pressed to find juice (other than the squash that you dilute) cheaper than milk.

Just a normal sized fridge-freezer. 2x6litre bottles can fit in the door, or one can lie down at the top. I don't have 2 large ones in it right now, but they do fit.

    Edited: I mean 6 pints not 6 litres! :o

  • I would only keep UHT milk in the ouse for a few days. Warm it tasted gross, and if you explain to them we have to use this milk as they're not obeying your rules on milk then they'll soon learn. Ity's just two of us in the house and we hate warm UHT milk, so we always put a new one in the fridge when the other's running out.

UHT milk is brilliant as you can store 10 bottles of it in a cupboard and not take up freezer space.

Other than that, I would buy full fat milk and add a good cupful of water to make the milk last longer. By doing this it makes the whole milk more like semi skimmed, but you're paying less in the long run.

We only use about 2 pints every two weeks LOL we just show the tea the carton in our house! My DD's BF likes milk on cereal so I buy him a small carton of whole milk if he is staying over and lactose free for me and DH.

I think the main issue is not so much the amount they're drinking or how much it is, but that she isn't even getting left a couple of spoonfuls per day to put in her own tea. I think if I was shelling out £50 for milk per month I'd be expecting a small share of it!

The recommended intake of milk per day for teenagers is one pint per day, btw, of either semi skimmed or full fat milk unless they're watching their calories. This is for calcium so if they're eating cheese and/or yoghurts etc as well that can be reduced quite safely. Whole milk has 370 calories per pint, btw, so three pints per day is just over 1100 calories......that's a lot of calories to be taking in of a single food group, even if they are growing. Semi-skimmed is 255 calories a pint, skimmed is 195. they've all got the same amount of calcium and protein, it's just the fat that gets reduced. Children under five should get full fat milk of course.

Just a thought, but do your kids like skimmed milk, skint, single mum of 4 ? It tastes okay in tea but not so great to drink neat.

  • I've just worked out that we use 3 pints a day now and that's just for me and OH.
    He's out all day too.
We spend £5.04 a week for milk as we get it for what works out 24p a pint at the corner shop.
Well worth it in my opinion considering how versatile it is.

    It's need to be a huuuuuuge fridge to get 6litre containers in - they're 6 pints ;)

In my defence I did originally say 6 pints in my first post. It was ceebeeby who said it was 6l. :o:D
