    Hope you've had a good day :)

:o:o:o I think of myself that way face to face definitely :rotfl: but even on here I don't visit enough "general" threads :eek::o Its good that you don't see me that way :j
I have a mixed variety of lettuce in a seed tray, had loads outdoors in the summer, but get some during winter. So long as they don't get too cold they're fine. Basil is really good, but I generally manage to kill it, most garden herbs will grow fine on a windowsill. How about mushroooms? Not very interesting to watch mind you.

Is your seed tray outside, Gill? Your basil too? I'd not thought of putting basil outside. I'm sure I've got the makings of a cold frame here, that would extend the outside growing season by quite a while.

I've been tidying a bit in the kitchen - as I get more storage space from the jobs I've been doing, everything needs rearranging. All the time :rotfl:And last night I ordered a compost bin online from my local council - £7 delivered. Its a smallish one, but even so thats not bad.

I'd love to finish sorting out the kitchen storage today, tho I have a feeling thats a bit too much, but I could get some done. And I did tell Pippi I'd get one bag of rhodendron prunings, and I'd like to do that even more :D So that will be the first thing I do when I shut down the lappie.

Off to see the diaries first, tho :)

  • A window box would be good for you I think - not a very big one - but that way you'd have enough depth of soil etc - or pots brilliant. Myfriend in the town grows all her cut and come again lettuce in a couple window boxes literally all year round - works brilliantly - but she had them tucked in outdoors in a sheltered spot - cold frame amazing idea.

The only thing about indoor growing I'd watch this time of year is greenfly - the house will be warmer than outside so any pesky little ones lurking about will think your new lettuce is mecca.

Mushrooms always faniced one of those packs - I had a pal who worked on a mushroom farm who use to spray the mushrooms with a very dilute bleach mix to make them whiter for the shop - I hope that doesn't happen anymore

  • I have both indoor and outdoor stuff. The basil and other herbs are in a large barrel thing that originally was used for the Christmas tree. When it starts getting colder I use my little plastic green house thing to protect it, and then if its really cold, I bring them in and put them just inside the back door. The seed trays are also kept in the greenhouse thing and then I just plant more in the winter, but keep them indoors. In some ways I'm fortunate because I only have a small yard its quite sheltered, and again as its a sandstone terrace (you'll know the style), the outside ledges are around 9" deep so can always put things there. When you've only got a small space you learn to be creative with it! in the summer I do tomatoes and peppers in hanging baskets, and put various herbs around summer planting. Apparently it keeps pests down somehow.

A different world - down with you!!! I'm greeneyed with envy what a lovely way to grow things - herb great for companion planting I think the oils they have keep the bugs confused or high!

Imagine growing stuff like that outdoors - blimey - I've read about it in books (not takign the mickey I have, in real life) but never been able to do it!

    Damn the frozen north!

That sounds great! I don't think I'd want to bring outside soil etc into the house, but I could definitely do the cold frame thing to extend the "cropping season" (sounds a bit presumptuous about a couple of lettuces, but there you go!).

Yep, I know the yards you mean - we had one like that in Wingate Road, they can be very sheltered. I'm all fired up now, I want to get out there and at least get measuring, but its raining really heavily :( Okay, well, I'll do the next best thing - I'll put the dvd tower together, at least I'll be ready when the rain stops.

    See you later
    xx

EDIT - poor Pippi! You'll have to come and stay, late spring/early summer, if you're flying from Gatwick ever it would really make sense anyway, then you can ogle the realities and the potentialities of a southern garden :)

Ooh yes please DT! Thats very, very kind :kisses3: I'll pm you my address.

I'm just taking a break from the bleepy dvd tower - got a headrush standing up, so got my lunch. And while it was cooking, the cordless screwdriver died (its recharging, thats okay). How did people manage before this stuff :rotfl: trouble is, I *know* how they/we managed - half the screws were hanging out :rotfl:

    morning kc
they managed,as we used to use real wood .which didnt require a 24 x 6" small threaded screw's to have any chance of holding it together
we used proper screws and nails which dident take as much effort to use..
