Thanks for this, se, I didn't see it earlier :o

It's not just you KC. I think it's partially because we didn't have a very good summer, so autumn/winter have come too quickly, and with a vengeance.

There's something to that - and, of course, in "summer" I was getting ready to move.

Fortunately today the sun is shining here, and it does make a difference. One thing I'm doing is forward planning a holiday somewhere warm next year, so that I feel like I can thaw out :o

It does make a difference, doesn't it. Its like that here today, but I felt so dreadful, I didn't even think of going out, but everything I *had* to do this morning has been done. I'm working in two hours time, so thats enough time to go for a short walk and relax afterwards, thank you!

I've never been a sun worshipper, so the idea of feeling like I actually need to do this is really strange. I've put it down to a combination of the poor last two summers and getting older making me a bit less resilient and needing to take care of myself a little more.

I haven't been on a holiday of my choice to a place of my choosing for almost ten years :( maybe I need to bite the bullet and do it from savings.

Are you able to plan a holiday too? Holiday's like this used to be a want, but now they're gradually becoming a need, and so need upping on the financial priority list.

Maybe I should. I booked those 3 days in Ely next March - exploring Cambridge is the plan - but maybe I need to go somewhere warm in June or so. One year, I was really tired and just booked one of those week long coach trips to Amsterdam. I'd been before, so quite often I took off on my own, it was a nice hotel near a metro stop. I might do something like that again, that was a nice compromise.

    Thanks se.

My current plan is to try to get to Rome, hoping to do it as cheaply as possible though. I wanted somewhere with things to see & do, a different culture, and more likely to have some sun. Hoping to go May/June or September time, as can't cope if it's too hot to do anything.

Amsterdam is sunny today, but a bit cold. But going to wrap up in a bit and get out to explore the local park.

It's definitely not just you with the winter - have you thought about trying a 'SAD lamp' or daylight lightbulbs? I think you can hire the lamps from somewhere to try out, they are quite expensive. Otherwise, holidays and/ or the south of France sounds good :)

KC, I think there is definitely something in the Winter thing. I often get poorly at the start of winter and things just linger. My friend told me one year that she thought that I had SAD syndrome. I love light and I actually moved house once as there was just not enough light in the house. It had never occurred to me that I could be physically affected by light. Like you I havent had a "proper" holiday for some years so I did bite the bullet and book my trip to the German Alps for Christmas. OH loves to go skiing, I just love the countryside. I have always had holidays in the winter to sunny places (until 6 years ago when all holidays stopped) but I am thinking that bright sunny snowy days will be really good for me too. Perhaps you could book a short holiday to somewhere sunny during the winter months. That might help you through the winter.

Wow. That would be really something! I'd need not to fly - I can use planes, but if this is cos I'm fragile, and need bolstering, then screwing myself up to get on a plane will *not* be useful. Maybe Marseille - that was my day-off city when I was au-pairing .... it'd be nice to see it now the metro's all built :) or .... now this is funny .... maybe I could go see my investment property in France :rotfl: I've never actually seen the dratted thing :rotfl:

My dad did a fantastic holiday all on his own (he had been given months to live and planned to take my Mum but unfortunately she was too ill to travel as she had also just been diagnosed with cancer) it was his dream holiday. He sailed from Southampton to Tenerife, then the ship switched over to the winter season and sailed to the Carribean and back to Tenerife. He did need to fly from Tenerife back but he loved every moment of it. It was in November so even better as he had only ever had holidays in the school summer breaks to take us away. He did end up living for another 3 years but what a memory he had and he talked about it constantly.
Not that I am saying you are going anywhere, just that sometimes we all put things off and think that one day we will do something but it takes a major thing to make us do it. Love the sounds of Marseille. You could go by train! I love the idea of taking a holiday just by train and or boat.

That sounds brilliant :T I wish my dad had done that while he was still able. I know you're not implying I'm going anywhere :rotfl: but stuff happens, all the time, and I love travelling so much.

Good for you for going for it! I might have a little play on lastminute.com.....

I am feeling, it has to be said, absolutely horrible. What if I'm like this every winter from now on? I'd do best retiring and going to live in the south of France. Which sounds quite nice, doesn't it.

You can go to Spain for the winter - which is what I keep trying to persuade my parents to do.
